I never figured out what the cause was, damn shame to screw up an old 50’s Chevy that way.

They seemed more concerned about the car than the driver ;)

That’s what I was wondering. How or why would anyone race w/o having proper restraints? I thought the cars must be inspected before they re allowed in the track. Maybe not.

Yup!

And he was strapped in..There is too much room in those old rides, even with a racing seat and he probably slipped out of the belts like a submarine...

They would not have let him on the track without the proper seat, belts and helmet.

I agree. A neighbor has a 57 and it’s an incredible car. I was born in 57 so I feel privileged every time I ride in it. Shame to see it destroyed.

His opponent in the Camaro set the whole thing off, veering out of it’s lane as it did. I’m surprised he walked away from that, after being partially ejected through the windshield in the rollover.

Maybe they were racing for pink slips?

Watch Dan Bilzerian take the pink slip on a bet:
1965 Shelby Cobra Vs Ferrari 458 Italia…The old meets the new!

Meet Dan Bilzerian and Tom Goldstein, two very enthusiastic and competitive exotic sports car owners. On March 9th, 2011, the men met at the Las Vegas Speedway for a very special supercar challenge: Bilzerian’s tricked-out 1965 427 Shelby Cobra Vs. Goldstein’s Ferrari 458 Italia in a tense quarter-mile race—winner takes $400,000! That is almost 2 brand new Ferrari 458’s! I will not give away the winner–watch the brief video below!

‘55, you can tell by the smaller, rectangular front grill with crosshatch mesh. The ‘56 had a full width front grill and a more pronounced “dip” at the window line behind the door.

It’s a 55. The grill was changed to go all the way across the front in 56.

The Camaro never actually left his lane, but he was having trouble keeping it straight. Looks like he (right lane on track ‘56 or ‘55) got concerned and started swerving.

Right. Camaro swerved, threatening the Chevy, who went into a wide-arc fishtail and finally dumped into a rollover instead of hitting the right-side barrier.

Glad he walked away. Sad to see a 55 destroyed but it happens in racing, classic car or not. But as a Ford guy I have to point out this would have never happened since the Camaro would have done all that swerving....

...behind him ;)

One thing to note though. Odds are strong that the car was either a basket case turned into a race car or an old race car to begin with. The big rubber in the back means it got hacked on pretty heavily and the value of a good 55 far outweighs the desire of all but an insane man to cut one up.
