People do this sort of thing. Rice has a lot of varieties and they may have thought a particular kind they like would not be here.
I’ve seen people pack Doritos for trips to Asia.

This may come as a shock to many but not all arabs are the suave sophisticates you see in the saudi royal family.

It came in damn handy my first night. Our hosts served us a dish made with goat cheese. It tasted pretty good and I had a second serving. That night, I was sicker than a dog and puking my guts out.
The Japanese meds took care of it and I didn't miss a beat, save for a little sleep deprivation.
The company also suggested we take water from the home country. I had a two liter bottle which raised some eyebrows going in at customs. But I used it to wash down the meds and avoid drinking the local stuff. After you've been there awhile, your system adjusts and can handle the local water, but you need to avoid it for the first few days at least.
These people might think the same thing about rice.
