Nearly a week after Nigeria announced a ceasefire deal with Boko Haram, which it said would include the release of more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by the Islamist group, there is still no sign of the girls being freed.
Talks took place this week between the government and the Islamist militant group in the Chadian capital, but they are shrouded in secrecy. A series of attacks blamed on Boko Haram fighters since the announcement, meanwhile, has raised doubts over government claims of a truce.
Nigeria's precipitous announcement, seemingly for domestic political reasons ahead of elections next February, could jeopardise the prospects of an accord to free the girls and bring peace to the northeast.
"I sense Nigeria rushed to announce the deal with electoral-political calculations in mind," said Mark Schroeder, vice president of Africa Analysis at the Stratfor consultancy.
"Getting a victory with the schoolgirls and a short-term truce with Boko Haram could be positive for President Goodluck Jonathan's campaign," he said.

The State Department refused to label them a terrorist group.
The kidnapping of the girls was one small incident in the terror Boko Haram commits. They have burned down Christian villages and churches and murdered thousands of innocent Christians.
The MSM covers all this up.
There are no girls to be released. Those who haven’t been sold are dead. Prayers for them.
It was obvious from the start the government wasn’t going to do anything. The families should have gone after them. Say each girl had two parents, four grandparents, older siblings and cousins. 200 girls X 6 family members = 1200 angry and vengful citizens. Even with rakes and hoes, they could surely take out most of the sickos and get their daughters back. Sadly, they didn’t do any more than the government did and now there are no girls to be rescued.
In other words Boko Haram needs to rest and re-arm.
It is difficult to understand how boko haram can not follow the Worst Lady’s hashtag: Release our girls. After all, moochelle is an authority on everything. Maybe she and Clown Prince obola should send their girls there to get the captives released? To not do so is sooooooo insensitive (and racist).
