I toured the Sun City Palm Desert facilities when they were built; Sun City was very proud of being sensitive to these needs. One of the things they bragged about was deliberately avoiding “well-lit” design. They varied light and darker spaces, so as to give the residents a sense of space, and to avoid hurting their eyes with too much brightness. It worked: having seen it with much younger eyes than intended, it still is memorable to me, classy and restful.
