Putting money in “safe” investments sounds great and until recently has been the way to ensure a decent retirement income. But what happens when the government “borrows” your IRA or 401c? Can’t happen here? Why not? Oh yeah, the government said it wouldn’t, right?

If you have money to invest these days it makes about as much sense to buy the Brooklyn Bridge as to buy stock in some fund. When the banks go broke (and they will) all those stocks and bonds they (the banks) invested your money in will also go broke.

We are entering a new world now, one where investing for profit will be a dim memory. In this new world investing for survival will be paramount. Buy “stuff” that you can store until you need it or to sell or trade for other “stuff.” I don’t even keep any extra money in a bank anymore. It isn’t safe!

I hear what you are saying but then again “stuff” corrodes, gets stolen, moths, rust. . .

you can’t take it with you, that’s for sure.

Perhaps “diversify” is the best solution.

Despite all the bragging they do about superior intelligence it’s obvious that their mothers lied to them a lot.

“I hear what you are saying but then again “stuff” corrodes, gets stolen, moths, rust. .”

Kinda like the way the dollar has deteriorated, huh? Every banknote in your wallet - whether a $1 or a $100 bill - is worth about three cents! That’s the cost of the paper, ink and labor for printing it. Worse than that, the “money” in a retirement account is actually a bunch of electronic blips on a disk or tape.

I have no doubt that once the SHTF the government will outlaw the use of gold and silver ... for awhile. In time though, precious metals will once again be traded openly. Until then, they will still be traded on the black market. Of course, anyone can claim that things like that can’t/won’t happen here. Me? I study history and try to learn from it.

I’m just pointing out that there no “perfect” solution. By all means store your bullets and canned goods. They can go bad, that’s all, they can get stolen, they can get damaged, they can just be lost if you die or go senile. . .

or they can help you out greatly in many situations.

I like the idea of investing in groceries, actually. Wish I had more storage space. IF you know you use about 50 cans of tuna a year, and you are going to buy it anyway. . . and IF your local store has it on sale for $1 off the truly regular price. . . well, buy 50 cans, and you have truly made $50, tax free.

What I would not do is buy 1,000 cans.

You’re absolutely right! Stock up on groceries and don’t tell anyone about ‘em. Even better - stock up on groceries and plant a garden. A big garden isn’t needed either. We grew a bumper crop of tomatoes last year out of buckets! Tomatoes need sun and we could move the buckets around to get the most sun possible.
There are lots of things you can stock up on - even money. In the past, when a oountry has gone broke, the local money still worked for awhile. The banks and ATMs weren’t working though, so it paid people to have a ‘stash’ of fiat money in small bills on hand.
There are plenty of accounts of people who have lived through the kind of thing we’re trying to prepare for. One of the best is Fernando Aguirre, known on the net as Ferfal. He lived through the Argentinian currency devaluation. If you haven’t read his stuff yet, I heartily recommend it.
Whatever happens, good luck!
