20 years ago, people new how to drive in snow and didn’t expect the government to mandate vehicle design to protect against idiocy.

One reason is cars were much heavier back then and could stop faster...and of course people had snow tires on their vehicles as well...

One reason may be that when the weather was bad you didn’t drive.
