In at least a few cases it would be for medical reasons, abnormal periods or some such. Don’t know how common that is.

Not very common, and if needed for medical reasons, not the same widely used adult hormonal birth control supplements and/or dosages.It's not a "one size fits all" situation.

There is a very good reason many pharmaceutical products are not approved for use on children or adolescents.

It's not merely the type and dosage level, it's more the wildly unequal impact of hormones on still developing human bodies, and at various stages of quickly changing normal development.

Now we know that smoking combined with taking estrogen supplements can cause cancer later in life. Just as now we know acetaminophen use will destroy your liver functions.
For twenty years it was touted as a “safer” option to aspirin...
