Thousands of New Yorkers living in dangerous 'cluster units' as homeless population tops 59,000, a record high
The homeless count represents a 10% jump during Mayor de Blasio's first year in office. Despite his vows to turn around the problem and ditch the use of cluster units, the city is still forced to house families in these much-criticized apartments, which have often been cited for hazardous code violations.
The homeless population has risen to an all-time high, forcing the de Blasio administration to house desperate families in decrepit tenements red-flagged by the citys own inspectors as hazardous.
Since he arrived at City Hall pledging to turn things around, Mayor de Blasio has struggled to confront a long-intractable problem that has only gotten worse.
By mid-December, the homeless census reached a record 59,068 nearly the population of Utica, city records show. The Coalition for the Homeless says it peaked even higher at 60,352.
The homeless count, according to the city and the coalition, includes 25,000 children. And it represents a 10% jump from the 53,615 in shelters on de Blasios Inauguration Day.
To reduce these distressing numbers, the city has tried to move families into scarce permanent housing, but has been forced to continue using much-criticized apartments known as cluster sites.

Eleven of her 12 children are living in the three-bedroom where she was placed. Each sibling in the home ages 5 to 23 has a bunk bed, with the girls sharing one room and the boys sharing another. Everybody uses one bathroom.
Theres no privacy, Hollis said. Its just ridiculous.
Isn’t Obama’s Open Borders policy great? Give them Free Stuff and they will come.
It will be hard to blame a Republican for the increase in the homeless, but I think the media will be up to the challenge.
Move all items in the musuems to the United States...then burn NYC to the ground.....
The traditional socialist solution to these problems has been to build a “camp”out in the country.
I know 2 people who work 3 jobs to support their families, I never hear them complain about “their lack of privacy” from working pretty much all the time of which a huge chunk of their paychecks goes to support welfare breeding cows like this.
My parents worked for a living, and my siblings and I lived like this.
It is not worth buying the complacency of these parasites; let us just stop paying them, and they can develop the survival skills so many of their Third World counterparts have honed - with no interference (or funding) from the government.
Put them on Ellis Island; let them “re-apply” to see if they have anything to offer this country.
B-b-b-but, I only thought we had homelessness when a Republican was President.
John Adams wanted to do that, rather than hand it over to the British. However, George Washington wouldn’t do it. Looks like John Adams was smarter than George Washington in one respect. I wonder if he could see into the future, and knew what NYC would become.
Not with an enemy islamist as President. If it helps wreck America, it’s on.
Will the lack of privacy prevent your conceiving another child, Hollis? What about any daughters over 14?
“Cluster units ?”
I’ve got another name for this...
cluster unit = Obamaville
“The front-door handle fell off last week.”
That’s just terrible. Apparently none of her muscle-bound teenage boys has the wrist strength to turn a screwdriver and put a new handle on....
I wonder whom did these people vote for.../s
You should have thought about that before you had 12 kids by who knows how many sperm donors.
But there's hope-I understand privacy is a right granted by the Constitution. That right justifies killing inconvenient children, so it might also work in your case. /sarc
