I don’t work in a factory. But, even if I did, I would never hire anyone who walked into an interview wearing a clip on tie.

Better no tie than a clip on. Just my 2 cents.

Back in the day, the workplace I was in required a jacket and tie. In IT this was considered stupid as we sat it labs and worked on dirty equipment, but we just dealt with it. One coworker on the other hand wore the same neon orange clip on tie and ratty brown blazer every time he had to leave the lab. Sometime he would even button up his collar but typically he would hang it from the second button and leave his collar open. He got harangued almost daily about it and while being under "performance review" for this behavior (and the guy was extremely good at his job) he went out and found a better job where he didn't have to wear a suit and tie. The company went to a business casual dress code soon after.

A well tailored suit, a perfectly tied tie, an expensive wrist watch, and freshly shined shoes might make a great first impression. After interviewing many people, however, I have found that they confer no additional intelligence and experience.
