I once visited a RMS Titanic Exhibit, in which there were some excellent displays of artifacts from that fateful voyage.
They had an exhibit where you could put your hand into a rubber sleeve and plunge it into water that was the same temperature as the ocean was that night.
Trust me...It was COLD!

“...since they surf there in Winter”.
So...there are people who actually go out in that water?! Goodness!

It was -4 degrees this morning. Again. Tomorrow is March 1. I live in Connecticut, not Anchorage. The normal low for this date is somewhere in the high teens.
This sucks.

Every year when I open my pool, the water temp is usually around 55 degrees. It is numbing-painfully cold ... and it always makes me think about those poor people on the Titanic.

Nantucket is most known for obscene limericks and cadence counts.

Since a snapshot “freezes” the action of an object with the click of the shutter...wouldn’t a crashing wave appear to be frozen anyway? (Using the correct speed, of course.)
Now, video of these frozen waves would be impressive. I didn’t see video at the site...?

You’re right!
I once heard tell of a gentleman that resided in Nantucket who had a distinctive physical deformity which made it capable for him to perform unusual physical activities.

The water that night was said to be 28 degrees F.
Most of the victims were said to have died of hypothermia rather than drowning.

The ocean temps in Santa Cruz are typically 54-56 degrees.
4/3mm wetsuits are usually required but every now and then we have some troglodyte surfing in boxer trunks. Its cold but not lethal.

Been to Santa Cruz a few times in the mid-late 80s. Stayed at the Dream Inn.
First time there was in April/May and wondered why no one was in the water.
I put on a swim suit and ran into the surf - and instantly knew why. LOL ...

So...there are people who actually go out in that water?! Goodness! In my area at the Jersey shore, there are a number of midwinter "Polar Plunge" events, fund raisers for various charities. About 5,900 participated in the Special Olympics one at Seaside in 2012.
