How Silencer Works
wshootingjournal ^ | 3/6/2015

A suppressor for sporting guns was invented by Hiram Percy Maxim and patented it as “Maxim Silencer“. The big deal about the silencer was that guns don’t have to be loud. Maxim intent was to provide a positive experience for the shooter and everyone around them.

The technical stuff is that silencers specially built barrel with interior components that diminish the sound of discharging by dissipating the gas while the slug is on its outward path from the barrel. There's obviously more to it than that, go here to watch the video by SilencerCo that can better illustrate this than us trying to explain it. Science of a Silencer

Wish they worked like Hollywood thinks they do.

Suppressors should be mandatory for hunting to mitigate hearing loss.

Instead, they are treated the same as fully automatic weapons thanks to uninformed liberal thinking.

Silencers work the same way the muffler on your car does.
It’s a tuned resonant cavity that utilizes internal reflections that are out of phase with the bang and cancel the noise before leaving to the outside world.

“Wish they worked like Hollywood thinks they do.”

I recall seeing a movie where they had one put on a revolver...

It works the same way a flow through muffler works. If they weren’t so heavily regulated, they would cost $50 and be available at Wal-mart.

I have some rimfire that is primer only, no powder. Very easy on the ears for target practice (sub-sonic). A friend did an experiment with a silencer. It wasn’t the “phew” sound from the movies...but it was a lot quieter, and even easier on the ears.

Google supressed revolver videos. Anything gas sealed, like a Nagant, works very well.

There are certain revolvers that they’ll work with. The cylinder moves forward and connects with the barrel with every trigger pull to seal the gap.

I can’t remember the make and model, but it might be in one of Hickok45’s videos on YouTube.

Or at least use a 2 liter soda bottle.

I’d say it’s less about phase cancellation and more about slowing the expansion of the gasses.

The suppressor is also trying to cool the gases as quickly as possible, since temperature and volume of gas are linked.

..thanks to uninformed liberal thinking.

Clearly, Hiram Maxim invented the silencer so evil, rogue assassins could practice their trade without being heard.

In the same way switchblades are only used by roving gangs to gut-stab innocent victims, between snazzy broadway dance numbers, of course.

I see your point.

We should ban mufflers on cars, so evil rogue assassins can't murder someone, then drive away unheard.

Didn’t We Meet At A Murder, old Hawaii 5-0 episode, had some people suppress their weapons with plastic bottles. Good episode.
