My gardening has now branched out (pun intended) to carnivorous plants. My six year old has developed quite the interest in them. Tomorrow we transplant two Venus fly traps into a terrarium, and plants seeds in it for more. Other carnivorous seeds will go into the fridge for stratification and will be added to the terrarium in six weeks. My son is pretty excited and keeps talking about seed stratification, which is interesting since I thing marijuana seeds need the same treatment. Oh well, here’s hoping CPS doesn’t get called lol!
Cleaning up the garden, getting ready for the new season.
I’m trying to buy three empty double city lots on a tax sale so I can expand my gardens quite a bit.
Last year we helped on the new community mass garden. It was a great success, and we hope to make it even better in 2015. The proceeds from the sale of sweet corn and some other produce all goes to help the local food pantry, which needs the help, it seems, more than ever. Lots of folks in need.

Gardening is great with the little ones. Our daughter used to enjoy it. She started a packet of assorted cactus seeds when she was 4. That was 23 years ago. We still have 4 cactus going, one is a fishhook cactus that is as big as a basketball. Teaching your kids about where food especially veggies come from is great.
Need any seeds? LOL I have a bunch of leftovers of lots of things. Some may be past being viable, but most should be OK. My husband buys things on the sly, and then I find we have a bunch of leftover seeds. I have stuff from five years ago to last year. I only buy Heirloom, which are becoming hard to come by in the stores - I guess they wised up. My husband buys whatever looks good to him that day. We cannot use all of this up - and I hate for them to go to waste.
If any of you gardeners would be interested, let me know. Also we have a LOT of dried hot-hot peppers (4 or 5 varieties) which should yield ... I think. I don’t know much about the peppers viability or the way to seed save those. I just left them in the peppers and let those dry out.
Oh no! I am just getting ready to start some onion seeds indoors. A first. We usually just get sets from Walmart or the grocery store.
We have traditionally been zone 5, and don’t have any spring blooms yet other than the invasive mint that is green all winter. The new USDA chart that came out a couple of years back said that we were now zone 6, but then the winters instantly got worse, so I still go by zone 5, and if possible get plants that will take zone 4.
LOL. I do have similar issues sometimes with my Hubby. However, we have a nice 42” southwest facing window in the utility room, and a cart with glass shelves in front of the patio doors for him to use.
I will never give up the dining room table in front of those doors. Really nice wood, and it better stay that way. Our living and dining is all in one great room, and I insist that it not be an embarrassment when I have to answer the front door. LOL
Everything else is fair game. I hang out in the basement family room which also has lots of sunshine in the afternoon in front of the downstairs patio doors.
Well, it’s got his interest, and so he may expand into plants for food too.
LOL. It is after all, the first day of spring! Time for hope and green and lovely smell of hyacinth blooms aren’t far off.

I only posted it because I think it’s a good model that any community can follow. :-)
Well don’t let my seedling failure dishearten you. I am a newbie and haven’t yet started anything inside with more than pitiable results.
I’m trying the seed route with onions
A: because it’s a lot cheaper.
B: it’s self-sufficient (heritage seeds).
C: suspect the sets I buy are ‘long day’ and I’m in a ‘mid day’ area.
Want eventually to plant seeds in fall and overwinter them.
I’d like that too. I like to plant stuff in the fall. Other than for potatoes, I hate spring planting. I just want it all to magically sprout up in the spring with out getting out into the damp and chilly weather.
That’s why I like daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths etc.
It’s snowing here.
Things progressing nicely here! Potatoes are coming up, as are the peas, cucumbers, lettuce, and acorn squash outdoors. Of course all the rest is still in the green house and won’t be set out till mid April or later.
So sorry to hear that. We had some snow flakes predicted on Thursday, but got rain thank goodness.
Our neighbor 2 houses up just put in a green house. I am thinking we may need to get one too. LOL
Thank goodness we visited Florida last week, although the heat did seem a bit overwhelming. :)
Still, we spent all of our time with family and friends. It was wonderful.
I wonder how much it would cost to build a green house.
