That's why I went with the Droid Turbo - 50% more battery and you get one free replacement for a cracked screen.

That Samsung Edge looks pretty fragile to me.

I think you answered your own question of why the battery isn't replaceable from a phone manufacture's position. They would rather sell a new phone than a new battery.

I think the battery lifespan has changed and is now longer than the lifespan of the phone itself.
