Furious 7 took the 14-year-old Fast franchise to the next level this weekend with a stunning $143.6 million debut.
That opening ranks ninth all-time behind The Avengers, Iron Man 3, the final Harry Potter, two Dark Knight movies, two Hunger Games and Spider-Man 3.
The movie also opened to an incredible $240 million overseas; that's without any help from China, Japan and Russia, where it will open in the next few weeks. So far, Furious 7 has earned $384 million worldwide, and is very likely on track to earn over $1 billion by the end of its run.
At the domestic box office, Furious 7's $143.6 million debut is 51 percent higher than Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $95 million, which was the previous April record holder. This is also the biggest debut in the franchise thus far, up a whopping 47 percent over Fast & Furious 6. Furious 7 earned $14 million on IMAX screens alone, which ranks second all-time for a 2D-only movie behind The Dark Knight Rises. . .

That’s huge. Furious is not my kind of movie, but good for them. A lot of people are being entertained. I think a large number of moviegoers are ready for some Glitzed Down, Blinged-Up blockbusters that allow for a complete two hour escape from reality. Last movie I enjoyed was called IT FOLLOWS. A very unusual teen horror flick, meant for grown ups.
I’m going to be seeing it next weekend. These movies are car porn, and great fun. I’m probably going to ugly cry at the start of it, as I adored Paul Walker...
Why don’t they just turn it into a tv show? They come out once a week anyway.
I give my ticket and popcorn $$$ to the gubment so the EBT crowd can see all the latest movies.
These movies are moronic beyond belief. Cannot believe it made $1 million let alone $384 million.
One of the four-thousand trailers that ran prior to my “Furious 7″ screening Thursday night was for the upcoming James Bond entry “Spectre.” And what a bummer those 96 seconds are. In Daniel Craig’s fourth go-round, the world is still colorless, Bond is still working through his prissy emotional baggage, and the tone is one of oppressive brooding seriousness.
Nevertheless I don’t mourn the loss of a simpler and better era when a new Bond film promised a grand old escapist time at the movies. That, after all, is why God invented the “Fast and Furious” franchise.
The most improbable mega-franchise in movie history launches its seventh chapter this weekend, and it is everything James Bond films used to be: insanely action-packed, exotic locales, colorful cinematography, and a never ending supply of beautiful feminine eye candy.

You obviously never seen these movies. The reason why it’s popular is because it has a true multicultural cast and it appeals to young adults and gearheads. It’s simply a great movie franchise.

It’s not “multicultural” from the typical Hollywood point of view. The cast is truly a melting pot with good character actors from diverse backgrounds.
What they are is Pure Escapism. You suspend disbelief going in and just enjoy the ride.
I love them precisely because I don’t have to think about them. I like the people and characters they play.
Paul Walker will be missed, he was a decent down to earth actor that found great success but stayed a nice guy.
No these movies don’t reinvent the wheel but I tell you in another era I could easily see Paul Newman and Steve McQueen doing this and having a lot of fun.
Oh grumpy.......it is a nice popcorn flix. Perhaps you need a couple hours of fun. Being all politics all the time makes for a miserable person.

Well there is no Scott Walker unless you are trying to be funny with hoping the Governor of Wisconsin dies. His name is Paul Walker and his death may have made a few more bucks but these films always made a ton of money even before Paul’s unfortunate death.
