How do you celebrate turning 109 years old? When you spent your prime years fighting the Axis, the only real way to celebrate is with cigars, burgers and milkshakes.

Let him celebrate how he wants to. He’s most definitely earned it!
"Overton, was born in Bastrop County, Texas to Gentry Overton and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Franklin. His father's paternal grandfather, John Overton Jr., was white, and the son of John Overton. He served in the South Pacific from 1942 through 1945, including stops in Hawaii, Guam, Palau and Iwo Jima. He left the U.S. Army in October 1945 as Sergeant ."
Impressive record, but all the places in the South Pacific they mention (Hawaii, Guam, Palau, Iwo Jima) are north of the equator.

That is one of my pet peeves. According to the idiots who write news stories and obituaries anybody who served in the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII was in the “South Pacific.” Iwo Jima, Okinwawa, Philipines, Marshall Islands, etc are called “South Pacific”. They probably call Aleutian Islands part of the “South Pacific”.

Bears repeating

Bears...
Good point though.
A man from a time when men were MEN!
God bless him.

Fascinating stuff. The Overtons go back to Andrew Jackson confidantes and became one of Tennessee’s wealthiest and most influential families so I am curious now from where the black side would have come.
I wonder what 109 years of memories are like? It seems like he has no major brain problems so in all probability he can most likely remember the past 100 years, maybe all the way back till the time he was 3 or 4. That is utterly mind blowing. He could remember a time when people like Mark Twain were still alive.
My grandfather served in the Pacific during WWII. He said that they always got a laugh about when the news reports would say, “ our troops in the South Pacific.... .” The only two things they could come up with was that it sounded better than “the Pacific” or that the censors wanted to keep the Japanese guessing.
