Years ago, there was an initiative to build a sub-$100 PC that could be distributed in the Third World to lift up the most poor and remote areas of the world.

What ever happened to that?

Note: the Raspberry Pi ran into problems when it was discovered to be susceptible to malfunctions due to optical interference from certain type of light sources.

It's still there. One Laptop Per Child. It's more like $150/laptop, but it's getting better. . . CHIP (admission: I'm a backer) is just CPU+ Linux Rom + 512K memory+ 4GB Flash Drive, plus Bluetooth and an old-style stereo/Atari video Cable. You want VGA or HDMI output ? Extra. A battery to power it ? Extra. "PocketCHIP" (makes it a handheld: mini keyboard, LCD display, battery: Extra. And it's still cheaper than Raspberry Pi. . .
