"His Body Was Not Able to Recover": Savagely Beaten Pit Bull Terrier Mix, Maximilian, Dies
NBC Bay Area ^ | Riya Bhattacharjee

Posted on 05/17/2015 8:49:09 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Maxmilian, the savagely beaten pitbull terrier mix who was found with missing footpads and cigarette burns in San Francisco last week, had to be euthanized Sunday morning after his kidneys failed, Animal Care And Control officers said.

"He endured so much abuse that his body was not able to recover despite the vet staff's efforts," Animal Care And Control San Francisco said on its Facebook page. "There was nothing more to be done," volunteer Deb Campbell told NBC Bay Area.

A $10,000 reward was offered by Maddie's Fund for information in the case after the pup was found at 6 a.m. last Thursday under the U.S. Highway 101 overpass near South Van Ness Avenue with severe injuries, including blunt force trauma to his head and body and broken and missing teeth. His paws were severely injured and were missing pads and nails and there were cigarette burn marks on his body.

"Absolutely broke my heart when I saw him this morning, lying on his side, but still managed to wag his tail at me," said a May 15 post on the agency's Facebook page.

Campbell said the reward offer generated lots of leads. "Because of it our animal control officers were able to find Max's owner — Max had been stolen from him early last week," Campbell said. "Our captain arranged for him to be with Max at the end when he was euthanized, so at least he was able to hear his owner's voice one last time."

"It's been hard on our staff. but they are determined to find who did this to Max, and are pursuing many leads," Campbell said.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is encouraged to call Animal Care and Control at (415)-554-9400. Callers may remain anonymous.

Oh, hey, no big deal! /S

Last week there was a thread about some savage, feral kid who beat a dog to death. Someone actually scolded us for condemning the Dahmer-in-training....”after all, it’s just a dog.”

Substitute squirrel for any beast.

This place is changing, and not for the better.

The bitter, hate-blind, absolutist vitriol is no different from that spewed by liberals.

You need to follow his ongoing tirades.

No matter what happens to a “pit”, he is glad of it.

All pits “deserve” whatever horror is inflicted upon them...just because.

Would you want someone whose mind works that way training *your* dog?

Yes, of course, you're correct, as evidenced by my typo. The daily stories about pit variants that suddenly "snap" and destroy a child, or a cat, are just anomalies. After all, all real dog experts, (a group comprised not of breeders and trainers like me but of [so often tellingly childless] "pit" owners, naturally) will tell you a daschund is every bit as dangerous as one of your delightful schizoid bred-to-kill often-a-ticking-time-bomb "WTF Terriers."

Please understand, I would not dare train a “Pit.” I wouldn’t take the responsibility.

I believe the breed is inherently dangerous, having all the worst Terrier qualities, plus awesome strength.

Some owners get lucky. Some owners are wonderful. You are probably both.

But this is a bad breed that attracts bad owners. Not every cheap handgun will blow up in your face, but why risk it?

Invariably - unlike with even a Chow or Akita etc, that will give you a second’s warning before biting and generally do not go into full-on kill mode, you would not want to raise little children next to a Pit owner. Nobody does, even Pit owners, frankly, unless they are VERY knowledgeable about the particular dog. So why be hypocritical about the breed?

Why this endless hogwash about how “it’s the owner?” You are a good owner, and you have a good dog. This much is as true as the fact all breeds have inherent characteristics and the Pits - TOO OFTEN - are wildly dangerous.

*I* don’t have a Pit.

I simply hate bargain basement histrionics and the continual torturing of truth.

Again, I do not have a Pit.

I have, and always have had Dobermanns.

You know...the other turn-in-heartbeat, kill-their-masters breed.

Why did no one post about the child who was killed by a “pack” of dogs, recently?

Because none of them were Pits, perhaps?

The poor kid is just as dead.

Why didn’t that killing matter?

I'm not out to change your opinion and you certainly will not change mine. With that being said, I have a few points to make and some questions I will pose to you. I usually try to stay out of threads like this but no one has ever answered the same questions I will ask you.

The daily stories about pit variants that suddenly "snap" and destroy a child, or a cat, are just anomalies.

Are you basing your opinion on the merits of the story in the media? If you are you can certainly cite for me the details of how the dog was raised, who the owners are and were they the right match for this type of dog. A high maintenance dog needs an owner that can spend sufficient amount of time with their animal. Was the dog left alone for twelve hours a day at a time? Was he fed properly? Any discipline whatsoever? Exactly why did this dog have access to the damaged he/she caused?

My guess is no you cannot. There is always much more to the "daily accounts" of any story.

I am nowhere near an expert or a professional trainer of dogs, but I do stand by my thirty five years of experience of raising pit bull dogs to know where the fault lies.

You seem to be asking me about “only one” story, so let’s take for example (as if only one example were needed) that of my good friend’s “pit” which he raised from a pup. No abusive owners, separated by the litter at what I was told was an appropriate time. This fellow was my friend: docile, loving, and absolutely adored the dog. To make a long story (yet another long story about “pits,” short) the dog was yet another nutcase. For weeks or months he was OK... And then, suddenly, on the street, despite the training, despite the “emergency choker,” he would lunge to kill. Remarkably, in the case of a cat one Christmas, even when he knew the cat! (She, sorry. She was a she.) She killed her master’s sister’s cat. It took about half a second - there was no reaction time. It was awesome. But why all this madness? Why must we CONSTANTLY defend the fact that you get either unlucky or lucky with pits, and it’s a roll of the dice? Why, why, why constantly defend the breed just because YOU got lucky? Oh well. Don’t answer that. I guess you asked for a “media” story but I don’t have one. My friend, deeply depressed, had to put down the dog.

I didn't ask you about one story. I asked about the words you used. DAILY STORIES Just where do those come from. I need to know to continue this discussion.

Another thing I'm curious about is why was the dog close enough to a cat to do the damage you state. Would that be the owners decision? Of both the dogs owner and the cats owner?

The black-hearted savages who do this crap make me sick.

[Years ago on vacation with my parents, my Mom took off for yet another walk with my collie, only to return minutes later and saying the dog was lame. It turned out that the dog, who adored Mom & going for walks with her, had torn pads on her paws. For years after, I teased Mom about walking my dog’s feet right off!]

It drives me nuts when people focus on its-only-a-dog/whatever rather than how blighted a person it takes to act out deliberate cruelties on a living creature.

why was the dog close enough to a cat...

This is precisely the sort of things only "pit owners" say. Anyway yes for regular stories check google news national or international and to be clear about this one attack the dog launched across a living room, maybe 15 feet. But enough.
