It happened sooner than that. Think about McCarthy and Edward R Murrow. McCarthy was right and Murrow had to destroy him.
I guess in my mind, those were/ are separate theaters- mass consumption & political. But you’re right. And Edward Murrow is the crossover between the two.
I’ve never really delved into how that played out. I should have because it’s always perplexed me. I was born in 1956, so all of that happened before I was born.
I was really kinda shocked that communists had infiltrated government & journalism back during FDR’s time. I can’t remember if it goes even further back than that.
This has a lot of info. It's a must watch video.
Mine, too. I’m presently re-reading Paul Kengor’s book (The Communist) about Frank Marshall Davis. Yeah, it has. I ordered the Mad Mens last year & when they get to the 60s, it really jogged my memory about some of the things that happened (I don’t think they were necessarily trying to, but my mom & grandparents commented on them. Yikes, they hated the Smothers brothers & I never watched Bullwinkle). As I was growing up, I was really conscious- or maybe sensitive to, this stuff underlying what was going on (the “anti-war” movement). I wouldn’t say I was “fearful” of communists- I somewhat thought they’d gone away, too, but I was only half surprised about 0bama. I knew what a duck looked like.
I am surprised it seems to be- or it is, so metastatic.
I’ve seen it, but it’s been more than a year ago. Excellent movie!
We watched TV but weren't addicted to any particular program. Mom hated the Smothers Brothers. We watched Red Skelton and Ed Sullivan.
Same here. Red Skelton was a favorite.
