Of course, my being descended from Southern Unionists who fought against the Confederacy doubtless has much to do with it. However, Forrest had a complete change of heart and became known for denouncing the KKK and preaching racial reconciliation and civic equality for blacks before his death.
He deserves to stay where he is, not just out of the general principle of respecting the dead, but because his life is an interesting and truly American story of horror, sin and redemption.
