I distinctly remember John coming out, in 1976.

I know because I really liked his music and was mortified that he'd decided to inform everyone how he likes to take it.

I really had no idea - I just thought he was just flamboyant.

Furthermore, Sir John is alleged to have pedophile preferences. Recall Scotland Yard covered up charges in the 1980s. Also distinctly recall a photo taken of young male strippers dressed as boy scouts for a Sir John birthday celebration in the 1990s.
Looking for link.

I hear you. We used to think that way about Liberace too!

I remember my friend Gary threw all of his albums out his second floor window.

"Coming out" as a bisexual. Heck, David Bowie was making noises about being bisexual back then, too, whether he really was or not. Elton was married to a woman in the 80s and didn't publicly identify as gay until later.

"Someone Saved My Life Tonight" would have been a better pick for EJ's coming out song, but it dates from the same period, when he wasn't yet announcing himself as homosexual.
