The fob for my current car is being held together with Gorilla tape. The local Ace Hardware claims that they can duplicate programmable keys for a fraction of what the dealership will want- I better see if they can dupe mine before the tape gives up.

Just out of curiosity, what year of Jeep Grand Cherokee is remote hacking out of the question?

I drive cars built before drive by wire. But I love these new cars! I get all the check engine lights, ABS lights etc. Good clean work that pays really well. 54 computers in an LS460, five in the drivers seat. Something as simple as a weak battery will light up a Christmas tree on the dash.

I really like explaining to Lexus owners that cars do not understand bank accounts. Show your affluence, suckers!

My neighbor resurrects old cars down to the frame. I think this may become an industry.

I know, there are more computers in these new cars than they had in the Apollo spacecraft and we went to the Moon on those. There is more computing power in these cars as well than mission control had during Project Gemini, yet in 1965, they tracked two separate missions at the same time, Geminis 6A and 7. It's like my late mother said, "there is too much 'Flash Gordon stuff' in today's cars."

You never know. I've seem cars with shot frames where they just basically build a new frame around what's left of the old one. Even if you can't count that as original, if you want to keep driving that old car around, that's an option if that's what needs to be done.

We can always make the "Corvega" from the Fallout (game) universe. All analogue instrumentation, no computers, a vacuum tube AM/FM radio and 0-60 in 0.5 seconds.

I know a fellow amateur radio operator, he still drives a 1964 Rambler American 990 he bought new in 1964. He said one time that he is "waiting to improve cars" before he buys a new one. I looked up his birthdate, he was born in 1914, 101 years old, still drives. He drives with one hand on the wheel and the other holding the microphone and he yaks in the radio and drives been doing that since the 1930's I'm sure.

Ace made me a new key recently but they said it would only work on the door, not the ignition. They were right. I don’t understand why but the new one won’t start the engine.

2014 Jeep. As time goes on, I really miss the old Richard Nixon to Jimmy Carter Malaise era, big boat cars we had back then, My first car was one of those, a 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix, velour seats, 301 8 cylinder engine, 26 gallon gas tank, 10 MPG, and AM/FM/8-Track. I put a CB radio in it too. Even so, at around 5000 pounds, it did move like a scalded dog and was comfortable to drive. I’d love to have a 1977 Firebird like in “Smokey and the Bandit” and I also liked Farrah Fawcett’s Mustang II. Recently I saw an old Ford Maverick and wish I had one of those too.

You have to have the electronics that are inside the old fob. Or you have to program the new key if it has new electronics.

Yeah, thought that was it which is why the dealership can charge so much. Evil.

Thanks for the ping/post, nully. That was one of my first thoughts.
