Chrysler Recalls 1.4 Million Vehicles That Can Be Remotely Hacked Online
ktla ^ | 7/26/2015 | CNN wire

A flaw in several Chrysler models lets hackers remotely control them, posing an unprecedented danger for American drivers. Hackers can cut the brakes, shut down the engine, drive it off the road, or make all the electronics go haywire.

...

The cars involved in the recall include the following vehicles equipped with 8.4-inch touchscreens:

2013-2015 MY Dodge Viper specialty vehicles
2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups
2013-2015 Ram 3500, 4500, 5500 Chassis Cabs
2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Cherokee SUVs
2014-2015 Dodge Durango SUVs
2015 MY Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans
2015 Dodge Challenger sports coupes

Chrysler said it is unaware of any accidents, injuries, warranty claims or complaints related to the software bug, other than a single incident reported by Wired on Tuesday. Researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek demonstrated the vulnerability by taking remote control of a Jeep.

Whew! My 1500 don’t have no dang 8 inch screen and it’s a ‘12. Somethin’ to be said for classic cars with carburetors and no programming.

Many of us here have speculated about this very thing since that reporter got driven into a palm tree in California.

“2013-2015 MY Dodge Viper specialty vehicles”

Well, that sucks. No wonder I still love my GTS. Thank you Playstation Gran Turismo :)

Long known as a Republican driver’s car,
maybe making Chryslers hack-able
is a test
of the administration’s latest technology
to
neutralize R votes?

According to something I read these cars really can’t be fixed due to how the software works.

Whatever they do would be probably only a temporary fix.

Oh yeah’ all this pointless technology on cars today is a total risk, to boot.

I really fear getting a nee car now. We have to soon, but just all the junk on the dashboard and at the radio segment makes my head spin. No cause for all that crap.

The recall fix is a software update? I wonder how long that will be effective.

Pretty quick work by the programmers, too - kinda like this bit of code was held back until someone noticed the security threat.

Just think, soon our cars will be reminding us to install security patches, a~la Microsoft.

I even read somewhere that they were providing the fix on a flash memory drive. How convenient for a would be hacker.

I received a email notice from National Institute for Highway Safety yesterday linking to the site for the recall information. There were instructions for downloading a zipped file to my computer which I performed. Once downloaded the file unzips to a thumb drive of a minimum 4 GB capacity. Take the thumb drive and insert it into the USB port in the vehicle and turn the ignition switch to “Run or “On”. The update self installs.

Funny thing though. The update is dated to April 2014. So they have known about this since before then and the update is just now being released? Par for the Chrysler/Jeep/Ram course.

I failed to mention the update is for the Uconnect system which is the area of concern related to the hack.
