Not being a renter or a NYer I understand very little of this.

She is in the wrong. I’ve had a bit of experience with squatters. It helps if you make the circumstance uncomfortable for them to stay. Too many rent-control laws can tie the landlords hands for months.

She ought to be evicted and jailed if it’s true that she lets her dogs pee and poop in the shower!!!! That is insanely nasty.

The landlord should take his case up with DeCommieio.

Okay, so the landlord needs to rent the place from AirBnb, and while the “squatter” is out, needs to occupy the place, change the locks, and put her stuff out on the curb, or he can have a friend of his do this. What’s so hard about outsmarting a squatter?

Okay, never mind, I missed the part where it said she never leaves. She does appear to rent out just one of the two bedrooms.

“If Outar can get her evicted, the apartment will go to market value, CBS New York said. The unit would become rent stabilized at $1,500 a month.”

I thought that if a family member inherited a rent-controlled apartment, it automatically became rent stabilized. I guess not.

In any event, the landlord seems to have a pretty good case.

How does a 58 year old get “ adopted” by an 85 year old? The judge that approved that adoption needles to be looked at!

If she really was the adopted daughter of the old man who had the apartment before her, then due to the perverse nature of NYC rent control laws, it’s not clear she is really a squatter. I’m not sure the current state of NYC rent control laws, but years back tenancy in a rent controlled apartment was an inheritable right. She may actually have a right to tenancy (again thanks to the twisted legal regime the city created).

Government setting prices. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

Rent control sure creates lots of problems doesn’t it?

Another liberal idea, which started off with the best of intentions. But there sure seem to be lots of “unintended consequences” from rent control.
