Henry Cavill is super bad in ‘Man from U.N.C.L.E.’
NY Post ^

Armie Hammer has given several of the worst performances in recent years — see, or rather don’t, “Mirror Mirror” and “J. Edgar.” The big surprise in “The Man from U.N.C.L.E” is that Henry Cavill is even worse.

Much worse: Cavill gives the most slappable performance of the year as Napoleon Solo, a CIA agent who, in 1963 Europe, is forced to work with Russian counterpart Illya Kuryakin (Hammer) to help the daughter (Alicia Vikander) of a German atomic scientist stop neo-Nazis from acquiring the Bomb.

The movie is a flop with only 13 million.

Both actors; Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill look very similar. I’m surprised the director did not look for a co star who brings greater contrast. An extreme example of contract would be the movie “Twins” with Arnold Schwartzeneger and that short, mouthy guy from Taxi.

Anybody see this movie? Mick LaSalle of SF gate gives it a “C” but Mal Vincent gives it a B+ becasue he’s glad it has a comprehendable plot.

We decided instead to go see Mission Impossible last night, and it was a fun movie.

I enjoyed the original “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” series so much that I dubbed myself “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.A.R.” in respect. No joke.

Is it ironic or appropriate that somebody with Armie Hammer’s background is playing a Russian agent?

It was timed bad and you could blame the studio execs. Everyone who’s in the LA pipeline knew the movie was ready more than a year ago. It was just held back as cavill was finishing up post edit for Superman V Batman.

Really can't stand these movies based on old TV shows. When I was a youngster, I watched Man From U.N.C.L.E religiously. I was in love with David McCallum back then. Now I ask myself, why?

Most movies like this aren't worth my time. I'm old enough to remember the originals fondly, and any attempt to recreate the original, or worse, to completely destroy the original’s concepts and make it into something new and different will just fall flat with me. I guess Hollywood is running out of ideas because they keep recycling old shows and movies. Why should I waste at least $10 to see something so unoriginal?

Everyone, name just three theatrical movies that were better than their TV ancestors. OK, two. OK, one.

When I saw the poster for this movie I was actually shocked that Solo had not been cast as a black guy.

Superman. I like the Christian Bale Batman better than Adam West. Spiderman, the 70s version was terrible.

“The Long Ranger” was universally panned. But I watched it on DVD and it wasn’t bad at all. Armie Hammer did fine.

Hammer was in ... ‘The Lone Ranger’ too. Armie’s the franchise, yeah!

Ding! Ding! Ding!

Maybe in the end we find out Napoleon and Ilya are long lost brothers (or lovers).

I was confused by the title because in Black lingo “super bad” mean really cool/powerful. But when this reviewer still uses the traditional square flat-footed meaning.
