That’s what happens for me. I have an iPad mini.

I use Chrome on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10” tablet as Firefox will not increase the text size as much as Chrome does. Safari is an offshoot of Firefox so try Chrome as others suggest to see if that makes a difference.

Safari has had this issue

Mac Safari had this since 2010. The answer was to turn off hot corners. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2430039

Hopefully it works for everyone else aswell. It was infuriating.

I just upgraded to 8.4.1 and am having the same problem. Hitting the back button goes to the top of the (latest) articles page. Argh....

Hmmm, I could not duplicate your problem...you change anything in “Settings/Safari” lately? Maybe try clearing “Website History & Data (cookies)” under “Settings/Safari”? (You will have to log back in).

I have been using my iPad for over three years viewing articles on FR and this has never been a problem for me.
I have no idea what settings might cause this to happen, but I suspect it is the process you are using and not the iPad or OS per se.
Sorry I could not help you.

Everything was fine until I upgraded to version 8.whatever. Some iOS forum links insist it is an apple bug. It doesn’t do it at all on some other forums, and does it most of the time, but not all of the time here. Thanks for everybody’s help. It may be something I have to live with.

> You could also open up an article in a new tab. Problem solved.

That's what I do, too. Hold the finger down on the link for a second or two, and a menu appears with "Open in new tab". When you switch tabs back to the prior one you came from, it'll be where you left it.

I have noticed that pages seem to reload their content when switching tabs; not sure what that's about, but it's rarely a big deal.

I use an iPad mini. Just tested with this article and then back to articles page didn’t have a problem. Went back to where I left off.

Close Safari.

Then go to

1). SETTINGS

2). Scroll down and click on SAFARI

3). HIT CLEAR HISTORY AND WEB SITE DATA

4). Finally in the pop up window hit CLEAR.

Then launch Safari, and try it out.

You will have to log back into Free Republic.

BTW, iOS 9.0 should come out this or next month at the latest.

I am using a mini as well. What version is yours? I was a holdout at v6.x until everything started crashing, then made the jump to v8.x. Now there is a whole new set of issues.

I think mine is 8. Something. Not the latest update which is 8.4.0. Or close :)).

The modem was the 8.0 something. Not sure where to look in settings to find the version.

It has to do with a forced re-load I think. . . I’ve seen it happen too. Check and see how many apps you have loaded on your iPad and close most of them. I have 128GB of memory so I don’t see it happen too often.

I had the same problem on my iPad and iPhone. If you use your thumb and pointer finger and slightly enlarge the font of the page and than hit the back button it will always take you back to your last article.

BK I use the "Atomic web" Browser just for Free Republic because it lets me change the font to something that is readable for old eyes like mine. It also lets me open all links in new tabs which avoids the problem you are having. At least it did last time I used it.

Hope that helps.
