If there is a permanent Freeper thread discussing the issues of Windows 10, and you are able to provide a link, there is no need to read further.
If they really wanted to alienate their customer base, they'd have written it so it only runs on a PC you bought from Microsoft.
Naw, it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread.
And I know that’s true because all the Microsoft shills tell us so.
With Windows 10 Microsoft has attained peak suck. ;)
Forced updates killed it for me.
“Microsoft has been pushing Windows 10 for over a year now, and it seems to be “successful.””
Another day, another one of these. No matter how many installs these guys have, the snarky tech bloggers will say whatever they can to make it seem like no one has. And then proclaim that Microsoft is going out of business tomorrow. Overlooking the fact that it’s on more machines than OSX and Linux combined.
And as for FR? Here is a handy scorecard for the first 100 posts on a typical MS story:
I expect 30 comments from Linux guys screeching about how you need to install Linux Mint.
15 posts of people claiming that Windows 10 made their computers inoperable and they had to buy new ones (i.e. People too stupid to be using a PC)
Someone claiming that Windows 10 installed itself while they were sleeping
The same 6 old dudes bragging about running XP and how only a fool would use anything newer.
“OMG I bought a Mac and I’ve never had an issues EVER!!!”
I have Windows 8.1 on brand new Asus desktop and I love it. It’s better than 7, imo.
This ought to be interesting...
After thinking about it for months I decided to bite the bullet and install. Install failed. So much for that. I’m not spending a day fritzing around figuring out their problem; I don’t want it that bad.
Forced updates, pervasive monitoring (spyware), intentional engineering to make turning off all the tracking as difficult as possible (malware), ability to delete or disable any software/hardware remotely (virus), ads built in (adware), installing without your permission (virus). How is Win10 not malware?
What would be a master stroke right now would be a well orchestrated advertising campaign for a Linux Windows alternative. So far it has relied on a passive, word of mouth campaign, but if it came through with a big splash, it would hit Microsoft at its weakest point.
A big part of it would be short, simple, online videos to show people how to use it.
The trick is to find out what people actually do with their Windows system. Not what they *can* do, but the most common things they actually do.
Well, maybe I’ll be in the minority here— I haven’t read the other comments—
I bought my new desktop with 10 as the OEM OS.
It is GREAT.
I am really looking forward to upgrading the 8.1 and 7 laptops.
And super cool move...making those upgrades free :)
(Which is different from “giving the OS away free...that they are not doing...even the free upgrades have a time limit.)
So, whatever the opposite of “alienated” is, that’s me :)
It is ‘Microsoft’s Waterloo’ for me. My household scrapped Windows on account of 10, and we are an all-Ubuntu-Linux joint now, on all but one computer, and that runs XP just to run some old stuff on.
Funny how all the people not using Windows 10 are telling those of us who are how bad it is. Probably the same guys who ask questions around here sometimes about how to get Windows 95 to load a modern webpage.
I like mine.

I bought a gaming PC (as a substitute for a full size system). It came with Win 8.1, and it claimed upgradeability to Windows 10.
I have to say, both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 exceeded my expectations. I’d been running Windows 7 on a six-year old laptop. Of course, the hardware made a difference. And, Windows 8.1 had some awkwardness in the interface. But, it was very stable. Windows 10 has eliminated the interface awkwardness of 8.1, and is at least as stable at 8.1 was. Both are rock solid... even better than Windows 7.
Downsides:
1) You need a fair amount of memory to really appreciate the system... I’d say 8 GB minimum. It will run on smaller systems, but then you can’t simultaneously run many other applications.
2) The forced updates, with no choice and no information. To tell the truth, I don’t like it on principle, but haven’t had any problems over the past few months. When I think about it, when I run Debian or Ubuntu on another computer, I pretty much accept all of the upgrades without much question. This isn’t much different in fact, although its different in principle. Here, MSFT is taking responsibility for keeping the great majority of systems out there working.
3) The sneaky gathering of information in default setup mode. Yeah, this sucks on principle, but it is easily defeated if you do a little reading. Don’t use the suggested MSFT account, and shut off the data-gathering options, and you’ll be fine. I bet that many of the people who complain about this are not being all that careful about giving away their personal info to the other online data grabbers, like Google, Facebook, Linked In, etc.
Hey anyone....on my Windows 8 laptop will the recovery partition be wiped out if I install Windows 10?
I just installed Windows 10 on an 11 year old laptop. 2gig memory 1.7gig processor.
Works better than it did on Windows 7 and Vista.
If the built in keyboard still worked, It would still be a great computer.
USB keyboards work ok too.
I think the younger driver writers do not know about "contact bounce".
W10 has a few issues, but none that are currently those being pushed by the tech weenies.
Myth one, privacy. There are ways to significantly improve privacy issues with the settings in edge and IE. For the most part even with out change this is a non issue.
2 installation problems, RTFM. If you prep your system for upgrade, and not just try to upgrade willie nille its very unlikely it will fail. That said depending on the age of your system, the system can black screen for 3-5 hours as stuff gets upgraded. You need to look at the hard drive led to see if the system is truly stuck or still working.
3 but you may lose all your stuff, actually related to 1&2 anyone who doesn’t offload their files to a usb drive prior to upgrade deserves to lose said files. Backup people just get it done. that said the data is saved in windows.old
4 you can’t choose not to install security updates. And that’s bad why??? Being less hackable is bad how? There are scenarios where this is an issue but they are in larger organizations running custom software.
Now why your a troglodyte if you don’t upgrade.
If your running a post xp computer its almost certain not only can you upgrade but you system will be better and faster. W10 can run on really old hardware 1ghz cpu, 1 gb of memory, you won’t want to do it but its possible. There are stripped version for specific uses that will run better.
The self healing attributes are amazing. One client dell W7 was a continuous problem, put W10 on a few months before the official launch and have not made a house call since.
W10 merges the tablet and desktop os with giving phone the same kernel. Why do you care? in ‘17 the phone os will merge as well, so anyone upgrading computers or phones needs to decided if it makes sense. Since by 2018 your watch/phone will be the guts running your computer, tv, laptop. Storage will be cloud and likely you’ll no longer have a home phone, cable package or even wired internet. G5 is just beginning to be deployed in Korea and its as fast as fiber. scales to the application and since the infrastructure is much less expensive then wire, total corporate cost will be much less, thus only high security required organizations will have wired access.
Cannot record under W/10 pro. It was working under W.8.1 but after upgrade to 10 it stopped working in tow motherboards. Including with a brand new mic as well as my old one, and via the standard jack as well as a USB sound card. And even if i turn up the mic vol. and boost all the way.
It will show it hears some sound (under Set up microphone) if i blow into the mic (and therefore it passes the test), but for speaking it does not.
Therefore the speech to text software is useless.
This has occurred into two computers, and under new installs, and Device manager shows no problems, and Troubleshooting solves nothing.
