Nissan USA has to pay taxes on profits made on cars sold in the US; US-based shareholders have to pay US taxes on their dividends as well.

It should be pointed out that in the case of the Altima vs the Cruze, more money is staying in the US with the Altima, more jobs are created/sustained in the US with the Altima, and more taxes are paid in the US with the Altima.

That’s before we get to the quality of the two products. The Cruze is a horrible pile of crap that goes on fire if you change the oil because they decided that they were going to put a *plastic* undertray on the thing that catches any oil drips. That’s right next to the very hot catalytic converter. Yeah, that’s not going to catch fire or anything. The car isn’t very good to drive and the interior quality is far worse than the competition.

Advocating that people buy inferior product on a false claim of supporting your country is exactly what happened in the UK with British Leyland. All the people blindly buying British there caused BL to make steadily worse product and in the end there wasn’t any more British motor industry because they simply couldn’t compete any more. That’s even worse for the country.

GM is still getting a lot of passes on things they should be having to pay and do from the government. Like things they should have had to recall and pay for (Impala suspension failures come to mind) but they get to walk away from because of the ‘bankruptcy’.

Also, you may want to go look at their non-GAAP accounting again. Even with their non-GAAP fudging, most of those margins are coming from their *finance* arm, not from production vs. sales. That’s actually where most car companies get the majority of their profits from. Direct profits on a car, leaving out financing, are often in the 3-7% range.

You are not alone.

You might say that I have a vendetta against GM (since ‘87). We owned a piece of GM cr#p (a brand new 86 Transam) and never forgave them for the terrible treatment that we received trying to get it drivable. We finally dumped it at a major loss after the 12K mile warranty expired and the Pontiac dealership told us that “their obligation to us was over.” Numerous trips to the dealership to get it repaired. Yet, the dealership told us “so long, fare well” after the warranty expired. That was the insult to the injury.

The da$m car would stall out and was making a nasty clanking noise from the rear end when we sold it. It stalled out on us on the highway as we were driving it into town to trade it in. Maybe it knew???

From that time on, I have hated everything GM and have wished them worst (business wise). I was happily cheering when I heard that they were filing for bankruptcy. I was not happy when the feds bailed them out.... with my tax money!

So, the only thing I can do these days is trash their name which I eagerly do at every opportunity.

Then one more ‘FYI’ for you - a modern free-flow catalytic converter reduces engine output by just 1hp or less these days. No need to bash out your cats or do a ‘cat delete’ to get more power out - or cause to ‘forget’ to replace them when they clog up/wear out, because they’re relatively cheap now as well.

I never said the Cruz was a good car. I know better than that.

I really don’t care what you, or anyone else buys.

Honest.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah. I don't worry about Cats. I have done cat-back exhausts before, but that was over 20 years ago. What I have has no need for performance goodies, or for me to take anything off. But if I did it again, it'd be either too old to need cats, or new performance where I would just work around them. I have Bugatti dreams on a Yugo budget...
