WAKEFIELD — Police are questioning a woman who fatally stabbed a 22-year-old pregnant woman in The Bronx on Friday afternoon, in what sources say was a bizarre bid to steal her unborn child.
The attack happened inside a first floor apartment at 4450 Monticello Ave. between 241st Street and Nereid Avenue in The Bronx, according to police and sources.
Police and emergency workers were summoned to the scene at 2:45 p.m. Friday and discovered a newborn child and its mother, who had been mortally wounded. The pair were taken to Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, where the mother was pronounced dead, police said.
It was not immediately clear where how the 22-year-old suspect they're questioning into custody or how she was connected to the victim.
The incident began some time after 2:21 p.m., when a 911 calls was placed from the home by a male caller who said his brother's "baby mother" had just given birth and was stabbed several times, sources said.
When the dispatcher began asking questions, the caller refused to answer and then hung up, sources said.
A second 911 call came in shortly after the first, in which a male caller said that guns had been involved in the attack, which police suspect was an attempt to speed up emergency workers' arrival.
911 dispatchers got a third call soon after, in which a male caller claimed he had just gotten to the apartment with his brother and found the grisly scene.
Police had not charged the woman as of Friday evening. They did not immediately release her identity or the identity of the victim. It was not immediately clear whether anyone else was being sought in connection to the incident.
Something like this happened a few years ago, in Kansas or Oklahoma I think.
She needed an alert man at her side. Honorable men are ALWAYS focused outward. Why is this obvious truth ignored?

A pregnant woman in her 20s stabbed another woman to death in the Bronx this afternoon, police say.
Though details remain preliminary, police responded to a dispute with physical injuries going down on Monticello Avenue near East 241st Street around 2:23 p.m. When they arrived, they found the 22-year-old victim with multiple stab wounds to her torso. She was taken to Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Despite multiple reports indicating that the victim was pregnant, police say it was in fact the other way around. "This story is really getting out of hand," an NYPD spokesperson said.
The suspect is currently in police custody, though the charges against her have not been made public. A man is also currently being questioned by police.
