I had Joyce Carol Oates for one semester of Honors freshman English. She wasn't too tightly wrapped, even back in 1969. After the first semester, she decided it wasn't worth risking her sanity to commute from Windsor to Detroit. The American dollar was nice, but not at the risk of losing her socialist soul.

She was one of the enforced authors through my high school and college. Joyce Carol Oates and Maya Angelou were about the best way to convince young people not to read, maybe second to actual physical torture.
