Jewish men tend to wear vestigial hats and Catholic women in the recent past were to cover their heads in church. I'm not sure about the sole of the shoe thing.
A hat with a fishnet veil and white gloves on Easter Sunday, with a useless little purse. But my mom would not have worn a burqa.
