Just curious. Do you think Melisandre had a practical use for Stannis? If her real business is beyond the Wall and the search for Azor Ahai is a sham (or if she already knows AA is someone else), why did she spend so much time with SB?

Keep in mind GRRM uses unreliable narrators. Consider Stannis wasn't her "hero" at all. Melisandre consistently uses him for a different purpose.

On that same point, Aegon written out of the show isn't so much a disconnect as consistent writing. "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die."

Since the Golden Company is composed of exiles and the sons of exiles, its participation implies a network of potential supporters in Westeros

Perhaps ponder who or what is behind all these machinations and repositionings.

Do you think Melisandre had a practical use for Stannis? ... why did she spend so much time with SB?

Aside from the death of his brother (necessary), Wildfire soaker, ruining his marriage, causing a rift between him and his best advisor, the tactics she used to ensure he'd have zero support at Dragonstone or the Wall?

Stannis was never the mannis. He constantly displayed he wasn't qualified for the job.
