They aren't "fascinating," they are sad. They are proof of how a civilized society can collapse and regress very quickly. Look at pictures of Iran or Lebanon from the 1960s. The difference is just as sad.

Iran has mellowed some since the Revolution. Women can get away with just wearing a scarf in public instead of the full beekeeper suit like in the Sunni Arab states. And it's more like Jersey Shore at private clubs and homes at least for the rich.
