Video: Child runs in front of deputy's car on U.S. 101

A Lincoln County family and Sheriff's Office deputy had quite a scare earlier this month when a two-year-old child ran into a busy highway right in front of a moving patrol vehicle.

It was caught the evening of Jan. 9 on a black-and-white dash cam video that shows the child appear out of nowhere on U.S. 101 near Newport's northern city limits before Deputy Jeremy Bautney stopped and scooped him up. Seconds later, a large semi-trailer can be seen passing the deputy and the child.

At the same time, the child's family was frantically looking for the child, who left through an open door at a community center after a gathering, said Lt. Curtis Landers, sheriff's office spokesman.

"It all happened really quickly," Landers said. "They were in the process of looking for the child."

Landers said the video was released not to blame the family but instead to remind drivers not to be distracted because you never know what may appear.

Having raised kids and taken care of grand kids I’ll swear to the fact they can get away from you so quick it is unbelievable at times.

I was driving past a apartment complex that had a street entrance that sloped down to the street when all of a sudden a little boy on a bicycle comes screaming down the drive way and directly in front of me. I couldn’t have missed him by more than 6 inches. Scared the daylights out of me.

Looks interesting. I don't remember seeing anything like that when my kids (as well as my grand kids) were young.
You see, my kids are grown and in their 50's ....my grand kids are grown too with kids....
OMG! That makes me a Great Grand Father!
(BTW I'm not volunteering to take care of Great grand kids. lol)

“Am I bad because I always thought that was a good idea? :-)”

Not at all. Sometimes a child will take off running and the “leash” can prevent a tragedy.

He didn’t run into the road in front of the cop.

He was already in the middle when the cop came up.

A couple of other people in the road a short way down.

Those are almost absolute necessities in places like NYC; any place where it gets crowded.

My fourth child was quite difficult to contain. She could wriggle out of every shopping cart seat belt there was. When she was 1 1/2 or 2 I bought a harness/leash to keep her with me and from falling out of the cart and landing on her head. The second I put it in her she refused to move or even stand. The only way I could have shopped would be by dragging her behind me. I was tempted but knew I’d get reported for child abuse.

She is now 10 and I often thank God for that. I half believed that she wouldn’t survive this long!

Two year old are surprisingly fast, and they corner better than just about anything. Catching them requires bait or laying back and cutting the corners while they tire out.

Kids in the road are scary. Several years ago, I was
driving in to Franklin and as I started into a curve,
a baby girl was just sitting in the road playing. I stopped,
got out & scooped her up and carried her into the trailer
park where she had obviously wandered from. Someone directed
me to her mother who had been busy cleaning and she got
away unnoticed. They are so fast! - Then another time, later, I was headed in to Nashville on a rather rural road.
A little girl was down at the highway by herself & was just
too little to be there that early in the morning or any time
really. I just told her, “young lady, get back up that hill
and get back home!” So, she did.

Then, there’s the cattle herding I do. One day I was
driving over on Hardison Mill. A little calf was running
up the road headed somewhere. I stopped the car and
started nagging at the little heifer to get back inside
that cattle gap! Well, she took off running back down the
road, looking across her shoulder at me and bawling me out
real loud; all the time with me lecturing her. Then she
ran back across the cattle gap and into her pasture. I
hope she’s still okay. She was cute as a button!
