Thank you. We’re auditioning a lot of YouTube music in part to see what we wanted for our own collections. We’ve been warned about the CDs that we wanted for our collections are becoming harder to buy new, so we’re collecting what we’re interested in with a little more urgency these days. Walmart’s $5 bin was almost non-existent tonight. Still, we brought home Foreigner, the Best of Foeigner 4 & More; Cheap Trick, Authorized Greatest Hits; George Jones SuperHits; The Essential Merle Haggard, The Epic Years. From the used music store we hauled home Emerson Lake & Palmer Works Volume 2; The best of Atlanta Rythym Section, Priceless Collection; Alice Cooper’s Greatest Hits; and U2, The Best of 1980-1990.
It seemed like it would be fun to include Freepers in the exploration of what YouTube has to offer. The Freeper comments have been very interesting and often educational. The breadth of experience with this music and the musicians is fascinating at times. Since the Freepers have such diverse backgrounds, I’ve been making an effort to find something of interest to those people having an interest in all kinds of rock, classical, country & Western, and the occasional wildcards which may not be as popular but have some kind of historical interest, nostalgic interest, and so forth. It sounds like that goal is being achieved to some extent.
The classical music, in particular, has been a bit of a challenge. YouTube is noteworthy for its inclusion of classical works you typically are not going to find in most retail stores. The retail stores have your typical selections of Swan Lake and every cliché imaginable, but not the rich and diverse works that you can now audition on YouTube and search to find the vinyl, CD, or other recording. I’ve been trying to explore examples of works on YouTube from each of the composers, well known and not so well known.
Another special focus has been the early country artists who established the country and western genre, and the related music they are now calling Old Time music is something being added to the wildcard selections. Jazz has been neglected to some extent and Motown, in part because we have less interest in them. Nonetheless, I’m adding some of them to the wildcards from time to time.
Again, thanks for the encouragement. If some of the listeners discover some new interests among the less familiar genre, that would be great.
