Oh wake up! Half the homeless male population of NYC claims to be a vet. They all hold up signs if they’re men of eligible age. In reading the article more closely, I see we have here the typical fight between street vendors and store/shop owners. This has been going on since Koch was mayor. Koch liked street peddlers because his immigrant family had a fruit wagon on the lower east side and so he refused to enforce or propose laws to outlaw them. Shops on fifth and Madison fought with him over this. Most of them sell touristy junk and are usually consigned below 50th Street. Fifth is sort of divided into two parts: 50 and below which is junky and 50th and above which is elegant and sweeping. Trump is at 56.
