SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) â Hundreds of Uber drivers staged protests at various locations around San Francisco Monday to protest reduced pay.
The Uber drivers have rolled through San Francisco International Airport and Candlestick Park. They are now heading into downtown San Francisco, where they are expected to make appearances at San Francisco City Hall and then Super Bowl City.
The Uber drivers, who took to the streets around 2 p.m., have been traveling together with their hazard lights flashing.

i don’t understand. i thought uber drivers were private contractors who set their own rates.
there’s only about six more words at the site than here in the article lol.
who cut the trip fee? why? was the government involved?
someone forgot to finish the article.
They are private contractors, but they work for rates set by UBER.
Horrible article. That's what passes for journalism today. Who, what, why, where; if you can't obtain reasons and answers what is the point?
No, Uber sets the rates based on mileage and actual traffic conditions. The rates automatically increase during peak times.
The driver has the choice of accepting or declining a job however.
If the pay is indeed too low, there will be too few drivers for good service and rates will have to increase. Right now, I’ve never had to wait more than 5 minutes for an Uber (in NYC)
Exactly right. Nobody is forced to work for Uber.
lol.
To get the article out and get a hit.
Not sure what we are supposed to extrapolate from this.
Are these idiots wanting to ‘unionoze’ and kill the company? Oh, wai............
I almost tried working for them until I read too many stories about drivers making, after THEIR expenses and UBER’s fee,$9 per hour.
UBER also recently laxed their requirement for cars to 2005 or later, instead of just 2011 or later.
I read a story in one of the car magazines where they interviewed some Uber drivers on the economics and overall experience.
One big consideration is that a lot of the business is bar related and you should expect barfing in your car. Not too appealing in my view.
Huh, taxi drivers did the same protests a couple years ago. I assume Lyft is following suit. And I’m sure no change to their tipping policy.
Agreed. AND the driver pays for the cleaning. No more fares that night, not to mention disagreeable passengers.
I declined.
“i don’t understand. i thought uber drivers were private contractors who set their own rates.”
Rates are set by Uber, and they base rates on supply and demand, so they can vary a lot.
I doubt these same drivers strike during a concert or other high utilization time that results in increased fares.
Uber is reducing fares hoping to increase demand, and thereby reduce driver downtime and increase their overall revenue.
I thought that Uber was pretty good at stifling this nonsense. Apparently, they aren’t.
They’re independants if I understand the model. Go on your own instead of using uber to do the “hard work”, and the hard working ones can make a lot more. People need to learn the difference between “business” and “work”. If you want to make money you need to understand need/market/product/risk not just “drive from A to B”. If you just want to drive from A to B you make the going rate for doing that.
