Thanks for the post - that is a classic.
Not sure if Ryan was really a head-hunter (like Pedro Martinez was) - he gave up a slew of walks, so his command wasn't pin-point enough (if Pedro hit you, he surely meant to).
It had to be pretty scary facing Ryan, though - 'cause they never really knew....

Back in the early to mid '80's I missed very few Ryan starts at the dome.

I'd get field level seats and go down to watch him warm up before every game in the bull pen, whcih back then was outside the foul lines next to the seats.

Seeing a baseball go that fast, and the sound it made in the catchers's mitt was amazing. They say he threw 101 mph at his best.

Now they have guy throwing 104 MPH (Chapman) I don't see how a batter can even see the ball crossing he plate.

Randy Johnson also gives him credit for turning him into a pitcher instead of a just being another guy who could throw hard but never knew where it was going.

The Ryan Express and the Big Unit were dominant!
