The people who armed the Mexican cartels, brought in almost 2 million moslems since 9/11, ignored Russian warnings about the Boston bombers, used the IRS to investigate TEA, wont prosecute Hillary, switched sides in the war to support AL Qeida, committed Benghazi, refuses to look at the facebook page of entering foreigners, illegally collects all your emails, calls and text messages and LIED to congress about it, called Fort Hood workplace violence, wouldn’t call the Oklahoma beheading terrorism, supported Michael Brown, supports BLM terror and rioting, through the State department bought the Toyota fleet for ISIS, blamed the magazine for Charlie Hebdo, and responded to Paris with an assaholic lecture about not blaming Islam....

*These* are the people who you suddenly think want to protect us, and deserve to be trusted. No freakin’ way, what a joke.

The government abhors the idea that we citizens have ways of communicating that they cannot arbitrarily tap into. That's what this is about.

Once Apple builds the iOS that will allow the feds to use brute force and crack the encryption, the government will demand the right to use the tool at will.

They will create super duper scary scenarios involving muslims and explosions and possible WMDs, but it will all be a bunch of theater.

Those threats are real, but the government's pretend addressing of those threats always seems to involve bringing the American citizen to heel.

You want to really address the threats, get warrants on the mosques not the tech companies.

No, a search warrant gives them the right to search. If the cops come with a search warrant to look in your safe, you step aside and say “there it is boys”.

You are not forced to help them get in. They can get blowtorches, drills, safecrackers, etc to help. But they cannot force you to help. Also, apple doesn’t HAVE or OWN the phone.
All apple did was build it well. Now the government want this tech company to spend time, money, and effort to create software for them.

Furthermore to what end? The government already has all the metadata. Locations, calls made to where, etc. The government let these people in without vetting. If it wasn’t important to them then, then why is it now?
They STILL refuse to look at a visa applicants facebook page, but they desperately need into my phone? LOL

I am agreeing with you on this, just the way you explained it..

The phone belongs to the County, and supposedly the phone was in ‘government’ hands and some dimwit changed the password in Icloud..and now they can't remember it?

Why didn't they vet their ‘employee’ a little bit better, they would have found out about all his ‘trips’ and his visa...their fault for not vetting their people better...

And I have an iPhone and no I don't have to go to that Wi-Fi to change my password on my icloud...this is just another way of getting information on people who have iphones or anything else the government wants; Patriot Act ring a bell?

I’m just 50/50 on who I trust less, the FBI or that sodomite that heads up Apple and lied about seeing a cross burning.

Exactly. There is another agenda here. Our government sides with Islamic terror 99% of the time. We even have an alliance with Al Qeida now and supply them.

But they need to get into the iphones to keep us safe. Its an absolute joke.

I guess we disagree on some legal points here, but yep, that's the bottom line. The behavior of the Federal government here would be laughable if the end results weren't so tragic.

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Benjamin Franklin

Having this kind of snooping ability will not demonstrably prevent any other murders in the future. This government will not use this backdoor for the protection of the people no matter what they say.

Had they handled it properly this would not be an issue. I think they did it on purpose

How many times have you created a password, then forgot what it was? But you probably wrote down the password elsewhere, or created clues to retrieve it. Or made it simple for yourself to figure it out.

So we're to believe that the government, on a high-profile case, let an idiot access the phone and create a new password, promptly forgetting what it was, so they need Apple to undo it? Highly unlikely.

The government did it on purpose. Absolutely.

Maybe among the papers in his apartment that the press was allowed to access?

Leaning Right: “But if a judge signs the order, then everything changes. Apple must comply. As an analogy, I will not permit the police to enter my house to just look around. But if the police have a search warrant signed by a judge, then I will step aside and permit the search.”

DesertRhino: “But you do not have to unlock the door. You do not have to spin the combo on the vault door for them. THAT is how our republic works.”

Leaning Right: “ As an analogy (I love analogies), suppose you represent the phone company, and the police showed up with a court order requiring you to turn over certain phone records. You would be in violation of the order if you just pointed to a bank of computers and told the police to go look for themselves.”

Kriskrinkle:

What if it’s someone else’s house, as it is someone else’s phone? Will you help with the search? Will you supply your own equipment, flashlight, latex gloves, plastic evidence bags, etc.?

What if you don’t have the records they want because all you have is a pile of raw data that was never assembled into coherent information or record format? Do you expend resources to comb through the data and compile the records they want?

They don’t appear to be demanding Apple give up something Apple already has; they appear to be demanding Apple expend resources to develop something new.

Who pays for the effort? If they found a scrap of paper in your trash with Arabic writing and demanded you translate it, could you? If not and they demanded you translate it anyway, would you expend resources to learn Arabic so you could?

How far does this go? If Apple caves in and then all the Apple workers with the required skills quit in protest, does Apple have to hire and train new people to develop the “new thing” demanded of them? Or can those who quit be forced to do the work?

The selfsame people who armed the Mexican cartels, won't deport illegal alien child rapists and murderers, brought in almost 2 million muslims since 9/11, ignored Russian warnings about the Boston bombers, used the IRS to investigate the TEA Party and block tax exempt status to conservative political groups, saw nothing wrong with Black Panthers waving baseball bats at white voters, still refuse to prosecute Hillary, switched sides in the war to support Al Qeida, enabled Benghazi, refuse to look at the public Facebook pages of entering foreigners, illegally collects all your emails, calls and text messages* and LIED to congress about it, called Fort Hood workplace violence, wouldn't call the Oklahoma beheading terrorism, supported Michael Brown, supports #BLM terror and rioting, through the State Department bought the Toyota fleet for ISIS, blamed the magazine Charlie Hebdo for their own murders at their headquarters, and responded to Paris with an assaholic lecture about not blaming Islam...

Allah the sudden, these are the people you think want to protect us, and you believe deserve to be entrusted with the master keys to every iPhone? No freakin' way, what a joke.

* did you catch that??? The have already illegally collected every call, text and email made from that phone. They have the data.

They need a fig-leaf to give them plausible deniability to explain how they got the data.

They want Apple to aid and abet concealment of their own felonious activity.
