We have discussed Rule 40 which says, I think, that a candidate must win a majority of delegates in 8 states to have his name put in nomination. You can't just win the state, right?
Do I have this right? So Iowa would NOT count for Cruz, but Nev. would count for Trump?
I forget, what were the splits in NH and SC?
Trump has one in the bag. He will get close to the 8 on Tuesday. Cruz will end up with maybe 6 or 7 unless something very odd happens. No one else will end up with any.
It looks like Trump will be the only candidate eligible for the first ballot at the convention.
Correct.
I can’t answer your question but this will show where things stand as of today: http://rsbn.tv/2016-gop-delegate-leaderboard/
Unless you count Guam or something weird, Cruz MIGHT get 4-—IA doesn’t count. He would have TX and what? He won’t come close to a majority in UT or AR, thought he might win each state.
why wouldn’t Iowa count for Cruz ???
He got 8 delegates, Trump and Rubio got 7, Carson got 6, Rand Paul got 3, Bush got 1...
I think that’s right...
I might have Paul and Carson wrong..might have been other way round...
anyhoo Cruz got a majority...
or do you mean he needed at least 50% ???
I thought Rule # 40 was - Rule 40: “If it seems like someone is out to get you, they are.”
Yes: 50% of delegates.
Correct, except Trump won exactly half the NV delegates which is not a majority. SC does count for Trump though.
Rule 40 in the RNC handbook states: that any candidate for president “shall demonstrate the support of a majority of the delegates from each of eight (8) or more states” before their name is presented for nomination at the national convention.
SC for Trump also. He got all 50 delegates.
8 states with more than 50% of the delegates from each of those states.
I don’t see how anyone other than Trump gets over that hurdle.
The calendar and rules were all set up for ¡Yeb!
(snicker)
Interesting. Thanks
Don’t worry about rule 40. It was put in place in ‘12. It will be changed the week before the convention when the rules Committe meets.
They do crap like this every four years.
Winning outright is the best solution to these issues.
makes one wonder just how much Texas will really matter for Ted Cruz.
We discussed this yesterday in some detail.
Also includes links to actual rule language and an analysis of where we are to date.

I hope you find it helpful.
No, as I read it, a majority means more than 50% of all of the delegates awarded. Cruz got a plurality in Iowa, but not a majority. In other words, Cruz won 8, but all of the others combined won 24; therefore, Cruz did not win a majority. However, Trump did win a majority in South Carolina. In fact he won all of the delegates. Going forward, and especially with the winner take all states coming up, it’s hard to see Cruz picking up more than two other states, whereas Trump should easily exceed eight.
Rule 40 was a temporary rule enacted in 2012, mainly to keep Ron Paul delegates from ruining the Romney coronation. The Convention Rules Committee will meet the week before the convention to set the rules for this convention and can do away with or change Rule 40 if they choose.
those were the rules...when the convention folks meet they can make new ones if they wish
well Romney wrote the rules for the 2012 convention so I guess Trump will get to decide on the rules for the one this year
