Stand by Me Protest held at state capital in honor of Lavoy Finicum

(KUTV) A protest was held Saturday on the steps of the State Capitol. A few dozen protestors, who say they gathered to honor the life of the late LaVoy Finicum, also vowed to carry on his legacy by taking a stand against the federal government.

Stand By Me for LaVoy and Liberty was one of a number of similar rallies slated in states across the nation, including Texas, Florida and in Oregon.

"This is a rally to show our support for Lavoy Finicum," a singer said to the crowd.

Organizer Cherilyn Bacon Eager said from the stage, "We're here to represent who LaVoy was - a peaceful man - and we are here in this peaceful rally today."

In a prayer, one musician said, "We gather in peace and in love and in solidarity and we ask for justice and we ask for enlightenment."

LaVoy Finicum was shot and killed by a trooper in January during a traffic stop while he was in Oregon taking part in the wildlife refuge standoff. A local sheriff's office there is investigating the shooting. The FBI released video of the shooting two days after it occurred, but many have interpreted what happened in different ways. Family members have described it as an ambush, murder and an assassination. FBI Special Agent in Charge Greg Bretzing reportedly described such versions of the incident as "inaccurate" and "inflammatory." Bretzing told reporters after the shooting, "Agents and troopers on scene had information that Finicum and others would be armed. On at least two occasions, Finicum reaches his right hand toward a pocket on the left inside portion of his jacket. He did have a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic handgun in that pocket."

Jeanette Finicum said she knew her husband best, and was certain he wasn't reaching for a weapon, but only reacting after he was shot. She says he then put his hands back in the air, only to be shot again.

"I'm proud of my husband. I'm grateful for the stand that he took," Jeanette said Saturday to reporters in Salt Lake, "He was a God fearing man. He was a family man. He was a man who believed in our country. He was a man who believed in the constitution, and he was a man who didn't like bullies."

She says that's why he went to Oregon, in an effort to try and help the Hammond family who he believed was being bullied by the government. Dwight and Steve Hammond were convicted for destroying federal land after setting a fire that consumed 139 acres of federal land.

Jeanette Finicum said Saturday through her tears of her conversations with her husband in Oregon less than 6 weeks earlier, "He said Jeanette...I can't leave... I can't leave. I must stay. They need us."

Finicum's oldest and younger daughters attended the rally, speaking to reporters about their father.

"It is my mission - as his daughter - to tell the world who my father was and what he was doing," Thara Tanney said her father's mission was one of educating others about their rights under the constitution.

"He will continue on - my family is continuing on - and his blood is watering the tree of liberty."

Brittney Beck, the Finicum's sixth child, told reporters, "Our liberties are being lost - they're being taken away from us. Americans need to wake up and take a stand!"

She says her father would be proud of what his family is doing now on his behalf, "He would be rallying us on."

Protestors plan to hold a day of fasting and prayer as they call for the release of 'patriots' they say are political prisoners including Ammon and Cliven Bundy and Steve and Dwight Hammond.

She was the first eye witness to speak out and tell what happened when the authorities opened fire on him and on the 3 innocent people in the truck.

I am sickened and stunned by the wrongful arrests that took place yesterday. Our federal government is continuing to lock up constitution loving patriots, who have made a stand against tyranny. From my observation, I have concluded that our federal government is doing everything in it’s power to totally remove the spirit of Liberty from our nation. By arresting or even killing the men and women who have stood for freedom, I believe that they hope to frighten other liberty lovers and stop the thirst for freedom. We cannot stand down now. We have a responsibility to pick up the flag that is being dropped to us by patriot leaders that have been arrested and murdered, and press on toward liberty!

What is holding us back from reclaiming our God given rights? I believe that there are three key reasons why the the enemies of liberty have had the opportunity to trample and oppress patriots as of late. I am going to present these three observations to as many people as I can, and I am asking for everyone who cares about liberty to consider them carefully, and to work together in regaining lost ground.

I believe that one of the reasons the federal government has been successful in trampling on our rights is because patriots have fear. We all have fear of what will happen when we take the risk needed to take back our liberties. I am afraid. I see what is happening to those who took a stand, and I already almost lost my own life. But we all need to set aside our fear, and do what we know is right. We have to stand now. Faith in God helps us to overcome our fear of the unknown.

The second reason we have not taken the victory in this struggle for our rights is because we are not willing to sacrifice what it takes to regain freedom. I have talked to many people in this past month who have said that they support the cause of liberty, yet how many are actually doing something about it? I’m going to be dead honest. It seems that more money can be raised for a sick dog in one day, than patriots are willing to give to support Ammon Bundy, Ryan Bundy, Ryan Payne, Jason Patrick, and the the other patriots who have been locked away from their families for over a month! Our Founding Fathers gave their lives, and so did LaVoy Finicum. If we are not willing sacrifice more than we have this far, then we do not deserve to have liberty!

The third and biggest reason for the disheartening losses we have suffered is this: the liberty movement is divided. I have seen and heard people from almost every liberty group talk of distrust and/or dislike for patriots in other groups. It is very sad to me that we cannot put aside pride and issues from the past, and work together for the cause of liberty.

We all know what Benjamin Franklin said, that we must all hang together, or we will assuredly hang separately. I too am guilty of letting minor issues get in the way of a relationship needed to work toward a great purpose. Not every person that you don’t get along with, or have a bad feeling about, is a federal plant. We all need to work together to unite, despite differences we may have.

If we do not stand together, we will lose everything that LaVoy died for, and that the Hammonds and Bundys are being persecuted for trying to regain. WE CANNOT LET THAT HAPPEN!

I am making a request to all freedom lovers. I need help uniting patriots across the nation. I need leaders from every group that is still willing to stand for freedom to start working together. We all need to be forgiving to those we are angry with, because we have all made mistakes. Please spread this message far and wide. It is crucial that lovers of liberty all work together towards one cause, or we will never have victory over oppression.”
