At the conclusion of The End of Our Time, Berdyaev once again stressed the unreality of politicsas a distraction and a hindrance from that which really matters, the order of the human soul towards the highest things, especially God and eternity.
Or, as Berdyaev put it, politics attempts to remove us from the interior life.
For the Christian to assume victory over the next century, he concluded in 1923, would be sheer folly. Throughout the West, in every type of regime (free and unfree), he feared ruin. Far from establishing a century of progress, God was calling Christians back into the catacombs, and from there to conquer the world anew.
As Christiansof whatever stripewe are entering an epoch of ill-omened revelations and we must fearlessly face up to realities. And there is found the meaning of our unhappy joyless age.
Reading Nicholas Berdyaev is not uplifting, but it is truly enlightening, in the best sense of this distorted word.
Certainly, looking back from 90 years after Berdyaev wrote these words, one would be hard pressed not to see not only the mystic but also, perhaps even more importantly, the prophet.

The true nature of Political World. Bob was thinking about it some time ago.
Political World
Written by: Bob Dylan
We live in a political world
Love dont have any place
Were living in times where men commit crimes
And crime dont have a face
We live in a political world
Icicles hanging down
Wedding bells ring and angels sing
Clouds cover up the ground
We live in a political world
Wisdom is thrown into jail
It rots in a cell, is misguided as hell
Leaving no one to pick up a trail
We live in a political world
Where mercy walks the plank
Life is in mirrors, death disappears
Up the steps into the nearest bank
We live in a political world
Where courage is a thing of the past
Houses are haunted, children are unwanted
The next day could be your last
We live in a political world
The one we can see and can feel
But theres no one to check, its all a stacked deck
We all know for sure that its real
We live in a political world
In the cities of lonesome fear
Little by little you turn in the middle
But youre never sure why youre here
We live in a political world
Under the microscope
You can travel anywhere and hang yourself there
You always got more than enough rope
We live in a political world
Turning and a-thrashing about
As soon as youre awake, youre trained to take
What looks like the easy way out
We live in a political world
Where peace is not welcome at all
Its turned away from the door to wander some more
Or put up against the wall
We live in a political world
Everything is hers or his
Climb into the frame and shout Gods name
But youre never sure what it is

Once again, Zimmerman nails it.

Help on how to bookmark articles ?
I see FReepers refer to bookmarking .. But don’t see a tool or way to do so on FR.
Any help appreciated.
To my knowledge, there is no way. One could create a folder in ones browser and save it there.
Or create a text document and copy the url there and save that document. Maybe jot a note to remind you of the content when you want to look at it again.
Sound like Pope Francis
OK. That’s what I did.
Interesting article and website referral.
Future reading outside of politics .... Needed that
Happy Easter.
Speaking of book marks .. You’re not Thee “Book’em Dan-o” are you ?
Beneath the article you’ll see “Topics, Keywords” and below that you’ll see “Report Abuse and Bookmark”. Click on “Bookmark” and answer “yes”.
Then click on your “Account” and you’ll see “My Profile”. Click on “Links” and you’ll see the thread you “Bookmarked”.
At least that’s how I do it :-)
Happy Easter!!
Nice! This passage is on point:
The same kind of defect, the flaw of a consciousness lacking all divine dimension, was manifested after World War II when the West yielded to the satanic temptation of the “nuclear umbrella.” It was equivalent to saying: Let’s cast off worries, let’s free the younger generation from their duties and obligations, let’s make no effort to defend ourselves, to say nothing of defending others-let’s stop our ears to the groans emanating from the East, and let us live instead in the pursuit of happiness. If danger should threaten us, we shall be protected by the nuclear bomb; if not, then let the world burn in Hell for all we care. The pitifully helpless state to which the contemporary West has sunk is in large measure due to this fatal error: the belief that the defense of peace depends not on stout hearts and steadfast men, but solely on the nuclear bomb...
How so? I am aware of his manifold foibles. What are you hearing in Berdyaev to bring Francis to mind?
For me, he seemes to be way way too entangled with the City of Man. This is what Berdyaev was warning against .
Thanks. But, I can’t do the steps you describe. Nothing I click takes me to a place where I see a bookmark button.
Because if you synthesize Francis’ message it’s about the danger of placing politics and economics first.
Doh! and Duh! NOW I see it. Thanks again.

Said no real prophet ever.
I recall listening fairly closely when he visited the US for at least a mention of Jesus Christ. Should that not be at the very top of his priority list? At least getting Jesus into the conversation?
It’s a quite long article. But, I recognize the inability to abstain from posting every thought that pops into ones head. In recovery from that.
Amen to that.
