Saying Goodbye To Ed Walker

Ed Walker spent 65 years on the radio. His last program was unlike any other.

Happy Spring Sunday everyone...

I think this is the first week of a new Johnny Dollar actor. A mystery lineup tonight ending with pirates. Can’t remember seeing one like this before...turn off the lights early for Mystery Theater which should be good...Halls of Ivy, a weekly high spot...Mysterious Traveler is a favorite of mine...and ending with a pirates and gold with the Mercury Theater (I believe this has a fantastic opening theme)...

How’s the weekend going?

Hello, FRiends! Thanks, Vision!

Nice lineup, although I'll miss Bob Bailey as *the* Johnny Dollar.

These brief synopses are used with permission from the RadioGOLDINdex © 2016 J. David Goldin.

7:00 PM Eastern War Time Your Truly, Johnny Dollar. 12/04/61 #717 The Earned Income Matter (AFRS) (23:22). I can't find this synopsis in the Index. The date may be wrong on this, because I found one from December 3, 1961, but it's a different Matter.

7:30 Dragnet. August 3, 1954. Program #259. NBC net origination, AFRTS rebroadcast. "The Big Stand". Matthew Denton has been shot on the street, right in front of a newsstand. The suspects are tall, lean, alcoholic radio thieves. Jack Webb, Ben Alexander, George Fenneman (announcer). 25:21. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

8:00 Gunsmoke. May 28, 1955. CBS net. "Cow Doctor". Sponsored by: L & M, Chesterfield. Ben Pitcher, a man who hates doctors, sends for Doc Adams to tend his sick cow. Tragedy follows. The program closing has been deleted. The script was used on the Gunsmoke television series on September 8, 1956. See cat. #17333 for a different production of the same script, two years later. Bill James (sound patterns), George Fenneman (commercial spokesman), Georgia Ellis, Howard McNear, John Dehner, John Meston (writer), Norman Macdonnell (producer, director), Parley Baer, Rex Koury (composer, performer), Sam Edwards, Tom Hanley (sound patterns), Vivi Janis, William Conrad, George Walsh (announcer). 30:05. Audio condition: Very good to excellent. Complete.

8:30 The Molle Mystery Theatre. October 12, 1945. Program #134. NBC net origination, AFRS rebroadcast. "A Death Is Caused". A woman plans to kill her husband (who is morbidly afraid of snakes) by frightening him to death. AFRS program name: "Mystery Playhouse." Cornell Woolrich (writer), J. B. Smith (adaptor), Bernard Lenrow (host, as "Geoffrey Barnes"). 24:12. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

9:00 The Halls Of Ivy. April 14, 1950. NBC net. Sponsored by: Schlitz Beer. The Halls are late for an important dinner because of a little lost dog. Benita Hume, Don Quinn (creator, writer), Henry Russell (composer, conductor), Herb Butterfield, Herb Vigran, Jack Kruschen, Jane Morgan, Janet Scott, Jerry Hausner, Ken Carpenter (announcer), Nat Wolff (director), Ronald Colman, Walter Newman (writer). 29:38. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

9:30 The Mysterious Traveler. June 8, 1948. Mutual net. "Murder Is My Business". Sustaining. A radio writer is offered $600 a week to work for Basil King, "the most hated man in radio." Unable to stand it anymore, the writer decides to kill the bastard...with the sponsor's new product! Robert A. Arthur (writer, producer, director), David Kogan (writer, producer, director), Maurice Tarplin (as "The Traveler"), Shirley Black, Richard Coogan, Eric Dressler, John Sylvester, Walter Payne (broadcast engineer), Carl Caruso (announcer), Paul Taubman (organist), George Cooney (sound). 29:44. Audio condition: Very good. Complete.

10:00 The Mercury Theatre. July 18, 1938. CBS net, WABC, New York aircheck. "Treasure Island". Sustaining. Second show of the series. An excellent adaptation of the classic adventure tale. Agnes Moorehead, Arthur Anderson, Dan Seymour, George Coulouris, Orson Welles (host), Ray Collins (narrator), Robert Louis Stevenson (author), Bernard Herrmann (composer, conductor). 1 hour. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

I can’t remember if Ed every played a non-Bob Bailey, but I have a very vague memory he may have once or twice.

We’re doing fine, enjoying a nice weekend, a little breezy but really nice outside. How about you? Any news?

I remember one. It didn't “work” IMO.

I'm good. Dethatched the back yard. Lawn is looking good. Work is well. Weather is great. Did Keith ever finish the radio?

Not an impressive first JD. Noticeable lack of energy and depth of characters.

Keith has several radio projects going on at once now. The big floor model Silvertone is still not working, but he’s bought several more table top models since then. He’s been working on one of them all day today.

It’s nice to get your yard in shape. Everything here is so green and pretty.

Meh, I’ve heard this GS so many times. I don’t think they play the full range of GS.

I don’t think they do. Maybe they just choose those with good audio. We’ve listened to the Gunsmoke channel, and there are lots of episodes with really bad audio quality.
