How do we know he was a Chief? Coulda’ been some janitor somewhere who was damned good looking... I was thinking traveling salesman - there are a lot of farmers' daughters. Wheeled transport would have given the first salesman the means to travel widely, while metal working gave him a product in high demand to peddle.
