In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
PALMARY [PAL muh ree]
adjective
The leaf of the palm tree has long been considered a symbol of victory, excellence, preeminence. The motto of Admiral Nelson (1785-1805)was "Palman qui meruit, ferat" (Let him bear the palm who merits it).
From this symbolism came the word palmary, meaning "praiseworthy, preeminent," derived from Latin palmaris (deserving the palm, excellent, admirable), based on palmarius (pertaining to the palm tree, palma in Latin).
A palmary achievement, like the landing of the men on the moon, or (in earlier times) the winning of a Nobel prize, is a notable one, deserving award and acclaim.
To whom shall we grant palmary acclaim? Those deserving of the award by some are considered louts of the lowest order by others. Is there a meeting place? I believe there is, but more about that later. For now find your best use for high praise and scatter your seeds where you may.
Palmary notifications in the AM, if the creek don’t rise.
Is anybody deserving of palmary acclaim these days?
We citizens who yearn to live under the rights and liberties enshrined by the Constitution lost our foremost champion upon the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. It is therefore our solemn duty to ensure that this great man is properly remembered, and that the enemies of freedom at George Washington University, who seek to deny having a law school there named after Justice Scalia, do not prevail in their despicable efforts to deny having that well-deserved honor bestowed upon him in recognition of his palmary achievements - a lifetime of service and dedication to our country, his wise and reasoned judicial rulings, and his ability to foster a clear understanding of even the most complex cases.
We shall long and fondly remember his frequent and thoughtful public discussions - always with a cheerful disposition, illustrative examples, or even an occasional joke. So for one who gave so much of himself to us, the very least we can do is to ensure his name and legacy is properly remembered.
As the crooked bishop said when he put his bribe in the extortinist’s hand said, “Palmary, full of grace, ...
As zencycler notes in post 4, Scalia is one such exemplary of palmary honor. There are undoubtedly others unknown to us because their good deeds are hidden under the rubble of popular chaos.
Look locally for honorable citizens. They are not many but they are notable for their sacrifice to their communities.
Here’s your election day summary:
Trump won the republican primary
He’ll face Mrs. Clinton
And voters are hintin’
That neither deserves any palmary
Oops - sorry, that should be George MASON University, not George Washington University, in my post.
i think you mean George Mason University, not GW.
oops, didn’t read far enough! sorry!
Waiting to see if Trump will merit any palmary before this is all over. I see his supporters here continue with the “we don’t need you” to those who have not supported him thus far. I think Trump is smarter than they, and realizes that he needs every single vote. IMO that those who are forecasting a landslide are in dreamland.
Agreed. Had an interesting conversation with a Trump detractor yesterday. He said, “I hope he proves me wrong>” I said, “I hope he proves me right.” Seems both of us were in precisely the same spot, with completely different attitudes.
You mean a landslide in Trump’s favor, of course. The opposite is the likely outcome.
well yes, of course. I meant the trumpkins are the delusional ones.
Amen. I agree.
the way he will need to do that is to start speaking in more than just flowery platitudes. Hillary will hit him on not being substantive, and it is the feeling of MANY who have opposed him, that there is no “there” there, and that the vague platitudes are a cover for lack of knowledge. he will not get the votes he needs by requiring voters to elect him in order to see what and how he will do things.
A crooked bishop? Shirley you have not hooked me for a loop around the fleeced herd!
Be careful about accusations they are nasty boomerangs.
