Yeah, OK, it's a gasoline commercial, but the video is in HD and the sound is spine-tingling. Turn it up.

The more cylinders the better! All the best aircraft and marine engines seem to be V12 too.

Part of it is geometry.
V8s of the same displacement get too wide.
Maybe not a big deal in a yacht but better for a car chassis or airframe.

“Nice! Screamers!”
You want screamers.... I got to hear one of the original Honda CBXs do a couple of laps. 6 cylinder of only 300 or so CC. Peak power at 17 to 19,000 RPM. In the words of one journalist it “sounded like a panther passing a kidney stone”.

Wow that was an era when safety equipment was a misnomer.Safety equipment was the guy with the fire extinguisher in the infield.
Besides, he's got his goggles and helmet, and at least two of his tires appear to be in working order. ;-)

I know a lot of the guys who raced in the 50s were in WW2 combat, so racing cars didn’t seem all that dangerous.

Modern image-stabilized cameras make those videos so easy to do now. Back in 1976,
this video would've been filmed in the Ferrari that provided the soundtrack, rather than a Mercedes 450SEL 6.9, had the latter not provided a smoother camera platform.
"C'était un Rendezvous" certainly has inspired numerous similar videos (linking it above for them what aim'y seen it).

It is a great ending. I was on those steps in Montmartre a few years ago and remembered the video. Such a cool spot, it overlooks the entire city.
In interviews, the driver/filmmaker admitted to having one guy on a radio watching that tight spot at the Louvre "tunnel", but the remainder of the cross-traffic was a total risk.

Now I know you have heard them sounds. Buddy of mine is begging me to buy this, but he just wants to come to my place and watch it on my TV because I have some speakers:
