Ah, the good old days of police work. Wood shampoo’s for e’rybody.
That's right EVERYBODY.....
I was there.
I lived in Chicago then and went down just to look around and what I saw was disgusting. The police were out of control, broken cameras and film covered the streets. I saw a guy take a photo and Bamo, 10 cops were beating him...for taking a picture.
Anyone within reach of the cops got beaten and the tear gas wafted up to the floors of the Hilton hotel that housed candidates and delegates. Most of the cops removed their badges and name tags so you couldn't identify them later either.
It was so bad LBJ (Dem) commissioned Chicago lawyer, Daniel Walker, to head a team of over 200 people, who interviewed more than 1,400 witnesses to the events and studied FBI reports and film of the confrontations.
The report released on December 1, 1968, characterized the convention violence as a police riot
And remember, that's a Dem President investigating the police of a Dem Mayor.
Walker went on to run for Gov of IL as an independent and win. Walker also eventually went to prison but not as Governor.
