Health officials have reported a fourth New Mexico death from Hantavirus this year, making 2016 among the deadliest since the viral illness first appeared here in 1993.
A 20-year-old Torrance County woman has died of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome – the state’s sixth reported case this year, the New Mexico Department of Health announced Thursday.
“The messaging is, (Hantavirus) is still here and you still have to take precautions,” said Dr. Paul Ettestad, the department’s public health veterinarian.
Hantavirus infection is transmitted by infected rodents through urine, droppings or saliva. People can contract the disease when they breathe in aerosolized virus.
The deer mouse is the main carrier for Sin Nombre virus, the Hantavirus strain found in New Mexico. Deer mice are found throughout the state, and people should take steps to keep them out of inhabited structures, Ettestad said.
Early symptoms of Hantavirus infection include fever and muscle aches, possibly with chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and cough that progresses to respiratory distress.
The Centers for Disease Control said there’s no specific treatment, cure or vaccine for Hantavirus infection, but experts say that infected individuals who are recognized early and receive medical care in an intensive care unit may do better. The CDC said patients are intubated and given oxygen therapy to help them through the period of severe respiratory distress.
The types of Hantavirus that cause illness in the United States cannot be transmitted from one person to another.

The funniest thing in the world is watching New Mexican news reporters pronouncing it H-ah-ta because they think it’s Spanish.
It’s han-ta virus. It is named after the Han river in Korea. Morons.

That depends on which part of the country one is from. Here in New England, almost every “A” is pronounced as “Ah”. Even “er” is pronounced as “ah”.
Not overly so. But it's bad practice to do any mechanical or fire-based brush clearing in late spring when its windy and dry.
New Mexico doctors are adept at diagnosing it. The problem is that symptoms are flu-like which commonly will delay a patient going to a doctor or ER until it becomes serious, but by then it’s too late.
If it ain’t plague, fire, hail, or hanta virus it’s some other damn thing. Last Saturday at the range (SASS End of Trail championship) I had to blow a 3’ rattler to bits to keep it from taking up residence under the deck where the dogs like to sleep in the shade.
New England .... no accounting for that bunch. They pronounce everything wrong.

You got that right. Someone close to me spent some time working at UNMH. When she went to work at a city hospital in Dallas, she was casually mentioned how they handled plague. Her coworkers all stopped and stared..... “plague?, like in the Black Death?”
New Mexico. Its a hard land. And as Lew Wallace said, ““Every calculation based on experience elsewhere fails in New Mexico.””

I’m in ground zero for plague in the East Mountains, plus I spent 5 days evac’d for the Dog Head Fire. The best plan is to listen to the locals who have been here since the 1600’s. They know what works, even if it’s 180 degrees from “conventional wisdom”.
When I was a member at Del Norte, they told me that any shooting of snakes was verboten, and anyone caught doing so would be disinvited from the club.
It sounds like I'd like your club better. I don't like snakes that can kill me.
Are you saying "Han" should rhyme with con, or can? If con, you're right, as the Korean language treats the han sound as if it rhymes with con. Americans usually mispronounce it as can. They don't really have a vowel sound that rhymes with can. They come close with "eh", kind of lick peck.
I was at a shoot at Del Norte about a month ago. They caught a rattler that was over 5 feet and as big around as my arm. They sell them to a place in Santa Fe that harvests the venom. Apparently they worth about $500 if you have the balls to catch it.
