‘Star Trek: Beyond’: Sulu is gay … and George Takei is not pleased

That does sound fishy. But if you leave out the jargon of later years (gay rights, LGBT equality, etc.), it is possible that Takei came to Roddenberry with a show idea that we’d recognize now as being about homosexuality and Roddenberry rejected it. Takei isn’t wrong about the show’s using the outer space setting for allegories involving contemporary issues.

For once, I agree with Takei.

I sometimes wonder what the originals think of the way their characters are being portrayed. Reportedly, Nichelle nichols worked with Zoe Sldana on Uhura.

I didn’t pick up on where in the movie this was supposed to be established.

Must admit, Takei deserves chops for speaking out like that against what they did to Sulu in the film. I may not agree with him on all things (in fact, we rarely agree on anything at all), but this bit, making Sulu gay, was definitely something we can BOTH agree on. Just because Takei himself is gay doesn’t mean that Sulu needed to be that. He’s certainly a better guy with more class in that respect than Ellen DeGeneres (or should I say “Ellen Degenerate”) regarding her show These Friends of Mine, or more accurately Season 4 aka Ellen where she decided that just because she came out of the closet, she must make her character in that series a lesbian as well, despite the fact that her character was obviously heterosexual beforehand (even trying to actually GET a guy to sleep with her). Congratulations, Ellen! You just killed off your show as a result!

Not sure if there was anything else of note for the film since I haven’t seen it, though the lead up review of Star Trek as a whole during the 50th anniversary of the series indicates it bombed massively.

And honestly, the current Star Trek (or as another user called them “Faux Trek”) didn’t start with it’s liberalism with Beyond. Remember what another user said about the remake of Battlestar Galactica being a thinly-veiled critique of the War in Iraq? Well, let’s just say that Into Darkness, if John Boot and some actors such as Cumberpatch and Pegg are to be believed, tried to push a very similar agenda/critique in the film, only replace “Iraq” with “Terror.” Even the original Star Trek had criticisms of the Vietnam War (in fact, I think the Prime Directive even was written as a response to Vietnam), and don’t get me started on how Next Generation seemed to double down on leftist ideals or die trying.

I will state one thing, though: Don’t blame Star Wars for the garbage that’s being spewed by JJ Abrams. Even though the latter is unfortunately one of us, he’s also been spending an equal amount of time trying to ruin Star Wars with his political agenda as well, arguably being far more lacking of self-restraint regarding a political agenda of his than even George Lucas (and when even a guy who shamelessly admitted he based the Ewoks and their victory over the Empire as being based on the Vietcong and made a very transparent attempt at criticizing the Republican Revolution and to some extent the War on Terror in the Prequel Trilogy comes across as a moderate, you know it’s bad news, and I’m no fan of Lucas and if anything I’m glad he’s no longer running Star Wars.). Let’s just hope this trilogy will truly be the last despite what Iger says, because Star Wars just needs to die now before it gets warped even further thanks to Abrams.
