According to Takei, in 1968 he had a conversation with the "Trek" creator about addressing gay rights issues on the show. "He was a strong supporter of LGBT equality," Takei says of Roddenberry, who died in 1991 and often used the show's outer space setting for allegories about everything from civil rights to the Vietnam war. "But he said he has been pushing the envelope and walking a very tight rope -- and if he pushed too hard, the show would not be on the air."Riiiight....

Sure he did. Right after he had the same conversation with John Wayne on the set of “The Green Berets”.

He was right. It was pretty scandalous when Kirk kissed Uhura in prime time.

That does sound fishy. But if you leave out the jargon of later years (gay rights, LGBT equality, etc.), it is possible that Takei came to Roddenberry with a show idea that we’d recognize now as being about homosexuality and Roddenberry rejected it. Takei isn’t wrong about the show’s using the outer space setting for allegories involving contemporary issues.
