After accusations that Windows 10 collects too much data about users, France's National Data Protection Commission (CNIL) has order Microsoft to comply with the French Data Protection Act within three months. The company has been ordered to "stop collecting excessive data and tracking browsing by users without their consent".
In addition to this, the chair of CNIL has notified Microsoft that it needs to take "satisfactory measures to ensure the security and confidentiality of user data". The notice comes after numerous complaints about Windows 10, and a series of investigations by French authorities which revealed a number of failings on Microsoft's part.
Microsoft is accused of not only gathering excessive data about users, but also irrelevant data. The CNIL points to Windows 10's telemetry service which gathers information about the apps users have installed and how long each is used for. The complaint is that "these data are not necessary for the operation of the service".

Remember the days when an OS was just an OS and not an active agent of company’s legal department?

If you what Linux is, then it’s not just a memory.
So shut it off.
I did. My desktop computer boots into Linux Mint as default, but I have Windows 7 as an option. All Windows “security” updates turned off, of course.
Waiting to buy a new computer until after the end of July, when the “free” Win 10 download ends. Will get Win 7 and use a different browser. Have no need for MS tracking my every thought and move.
Yeah, it was called "dialup."
How much longer will I be able to say with windows 7?
“How much longer will I be able to say with windows 7?”
For as long as you can speak- I guess.
The wife got me a really nice computer last month to replace my aging $150 E-Machine from Walmart. The new box is pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Ultimate, but like you, I'm not connecting it to the internet until after July 29th, when the free Windows 10 thing is over.
As long as you want. I still run xp machines.
Not on my computer.
From what I understand, W7 will still be getting security updates until January of 2020.
It gets worse by the day. These creeps basically want to enslave people (Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc., ad nauseum).
Thanks.
I'm getting pretty old.
That may be long enough for me.
As with the Mac OS that I still us.
As the other fella pointed out: outside of Windozeland is can still be.
Yes, it does. Run WireShark on a Windows 10 system and watch all the data being sent to a myriad of Microsoft servers. WireShark is a free download and is a primary tool used by network engineers and system administrators.
I run it on Windows 7 and I see it trying to talk to many IP addresses. There’s way too much traffic for an idling system.
